hellooooo !!

How strange that a gandmother would 'steal' her grandson !?!?

I guess it was the Irwin's not the McKinley's??

Do you know how long he was away from his family??

I would love to exchange emails & information with you Colin....I'll look for this private message thing.

I have some info on the other McKinley siblings....plenty on my side.

Aslo...did you look at the photo I posted??
I thought it was George McKinley but it seems to be too old.
Any family resemblance?
Cheers
Karen

hi again.

Yes her father was in the 2nd Batallion, 20th Foot at Aldershot Barracks when she was born in 1862.
But they were from Ireland.

John Irwin from Ireland ::)

George senior married Elizabeth Irwin at Lurgan, Shankill, Armagh, Ireland on 31 Dec 1884.
(I was so excited when I finally found this cert !!)
They had 8 children, George the 2nd son..Isaac 2 years older.

On 1891 & 1901 George just says he is from ireland & a tailor.
No mention of retired soldier. :(

I have no idea where George senior was born.

As to the photo...I only have a scanned version from a distant relative in England. Not sure if the if it's an original.
I haven't altered the size.

Thanks Ken.

So he is definitely in an English light infantry.

He doesn't have a wedding ring on.

If they all wore rings in those days...could it be George senior before his marriage 1884???

Could the photo be that old???

I have no record of George before the 1891 census...when he was a tailor in Bradford.

I think I am clutching at straws now :(

Thanks for your thoughts everyone.

I have been Googling (I am a dog with a bone now :))

All the badges seem to have the widest part of the bugle on the left.  George has the widest part on the right.

Is this significant??

Or could the phot have been reversed ???

The light infantry badges are here .. ..
www.lightinfantry.me.uk/ksli.htm

Also...George was Irish...is it possible he was in an Irish uniform???

My grandmother moved to Australia in the 1920's, & never saw her 7 brothers & sisters again.
She kept in contact with them all via letters & had lots of photos of everyone...but when she passed away in the 1970's, my mother threw everything out...even photos.

Now last year, I found a descendant of my Grandmother's sister. She sent me some photos via email. She even had photos of me as a kid...Crazy.

Anyway...she sent me this photo saying it was George McKinley, her uncle...gt uncle I guess.

So I won't be able to check the back, and I've lost contact with the lady who sent them.
I'll try to find her again.

I would love that to be the case, but old George (my gt grandfather) was a tailor at Potternewton in the 1901 census. He was also listed as a tailor in the 1891 census, living at Bradford.

Young George was not at home.

I have no idea who this is now :'(

Oh gee. :o

So it might not be the George McKinley I thought it was !! :o

His father was also George, but he was born abt 1863.

But he would be too old wouldn't he :-\

So you think this guy in the photo would have been born about 1875 ish??

Ok..back to the drawing board.

Thanks Ken
