Thank you. Any further information about the life of my great grandad would be much appreciated. I have forwarded to you the link for Ancestry for you to see my family tree and the details I have for the Gilbert side of the family. Alfred is the only great granparent I do not have a photo of. I am hoping that one may turn up at some point.

Jim the post from srimnet refers to two diamond stripes and says my grandad was a corporal. As you know I am trying to identify  his mic and medal record with very little to go on. Does this mean that I should be looking for a corporal on the mic? One other thing the photo has 23 June 1919 on the reverse. This may be significant as there is another mic for a private Alfred Cherry who left service on this date and was put on the reserve list?

I have looked at this but I am not sure if it is his. I'm struggling with the comments made a while ago by my Nan. I'm sure she mentioned Mechanical, Royal(?) Engineers, Warwickshire etc as I repeated in my earlier posts. There are other MIC's for Alfred Cherry and even Alfred Henry Cherry but I've ruled out the latter after looking at his army pension records.

Does this photo shed any light on his army service? I recall my Nan said his friend shown on the right was Frank Perry, and I had made a note at the time: Royal Engineers, Mechanical Corp, Warwickshire.

Does this picture hold any clues to his army service as I'm still not sure I have the right medal card? This picture was sent to my Nan and is dated on the reverse 23 June 1919 Salonika

Dear Jim,

The clasps cover Cape Colony, Orange Free State, and Transvaal.
The signed by place and date are not shown on the medal verification form I received.

The Kings SA Medal appears on Roll WO100/307 P221 Number AG2/M/10557
The two clasps are SA 1901 and SA 1902. Record states unit 38th Battery RFA.
Transferred to 68th Battery RFA 31 January 1902.

The next page for the Kings SA Roll WO100/307 P 338 number ag2/m/7523 says Sent home to No 6 Depot 18 July 1902
Signed by WEClark Cpt RFA Comdg 68th Battery RFA Place Limerick 21 December 1902.
I would also like you to have a look at his service records which I'm finding almost impossible to read but the files are too large to attach. Prior to the Boer War he served in India and afterwards in WW1
Regards
Chris

Warwickshire / Alfred Henry Cherry M2?

I have a medal record which I think relates to my grandfather in WW1 ASC. Any ideas what the M2 signifies before his regimental number?

I have his service record but its really difficult to read and there are lots of abbreviations. What I was after was some reference material that would detail what the 38th Battery, 68th Battery etc actually did during the war.

Jim his medal states ASC which I take to read Army Service Corps. Is this separate from the Royal Engineers? What does the M2 signify before his regimental number?
Thanks
