Buckinghamshire / Re: Burnham - missing burials
« on: Wednesday 30 June 10 23:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi Lesanne
John Gouldwin and Venice were husband and wife. He died in October 1689 and left a will summarised as follows:-
A Summary of the Will of John Goldwin of Burnham, tailor
Ref: D/A/we 41/39
Dated 5th September 1685
Proved 19th May 1690 by Venace Goldwin, widow, sole executrix
Wife: Venace Goldwin
Son: John Goldwin
Daughter: Mary Devenshier
Son: Samuel Goldwin
Son: Henry Goldwin

I am interested to know more about them in the will, as I haven't been able to fit them in with my Gouldwins yet, though I am confident that they are related.

Bye for now

Devon / Re: ACFORD Family

Dear Dorothy

Thanks ever so much for that. With the later generations I agree with William's children and Eliza Sage etc but I have the following:-

1 William ACFORD
----------------------------------------
Death:   bef 1841
Occ:   Mason
Father:   Robert ACFORD (~1784-)
Mother:   Catherine HARRIS (1789-)

Spouse:   Elizabeth Chapell TRICK
Birth:   abt 1808
Father:   John TRICK (~1761-)
Mother:   Sarah CHAPELL
Marr:   12 Jun 1831, St Mary's, Bideford, Devon

Children:   Robert (Died as Infant)
   William (1834-1909)

1.1 William ACFORD
----------------------------------------
Birth:   1834, Bideford, Devon
Death:   1909, Neath Registration District, Glamorgan
Occ:   Bootmaker
Spouse:   Eliza SAGE

In 1841 William was living in Silver Street, Braunton with his aunt Catherine Passmore.
In 1861 & 1871 William & Eliza were living in Braunton, Devon.
In 1881 William was a quarryman liiving in Llewellyn Street, Aberavon, with his wife Eliza and children, John , Mary Jane & Florence.
In 1901 William was living in Llewellyn Street, Aberavon.

I haven't got any mention of a Charlotte, and the William born in 1835 definitely didn't die in 1882, as you can see from the 1901 census above.

I had assumed that Robert's parents were a William and Sarah, but I had no other detail, so your info was fantastic.

If you have anything that contradicts Elizabeth Chapell Trick then I would love to know so that I can correct my records.
Many thanks
Karen

If you are researching the Acfords in Bideford have you come across William Acford bapt 1808 son of Robert and Catherine and married in Bideford in 1831 to Elizabeth Chappell Trick.
As far as I can work out he was an only child. His mother appears to have remarried a Richard Passmore in 1831.
It confused me to bits to find that William had a grandson called Richard Passmore Acford, name in honour of a step-Gt Grandfather !

Any guidance finding Robert Acford would be greatly appreciated.

Argyllshire / McCorquodales and places of Lismore
« on: Saturday 16 August 08 00:55 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace the family of Archibald McCorquodale/McCorkindale and Ann McPhail/McPhale who lived in various hamlets on Lismore.
I have two problems, one I can't track where Archibald came from and secondly I am unable to find the place names in the OPR.
The eldest daughter Katharine was born in 1786 in the parish of Kilmore & Kilbride at a place which looks like "Marnacary".
The second child Isobel was born in the Lismore, Appin & Duror parish at a place called "Porteharon". The place name given in 1793 for the third daughter Margaret look like "Dalinrue".
Any help with these place names would be greatly appreciated.

Buckinghamshire / Re: Burnham - missing burials

Yes indeed there are loads of Dawsons, Bayleys and Goldwins pushing up the daisies at St Peters.  :)
I've acutally looked at the PR and the burials are in the main there, they just hadn't been collated by the Bucks FHS.
However Burnham does seem to be the centre of all things genealogical at the moment as I've justed gone through the registers for  the 3rd time, with my families of interesting being:
Ives, Goldwin, Dawson, Messenger, Style and Mason.
Very complicated as  I have paternal and maternal lines there intermarried - what fun  ;D

What a star  ;D - no you are not muddled, the Dawson family assumption was mine. I couldn't find Elizabeth & Thomas Dawson in Burnham, but there was an Elizabeth and Thomas Dawson of the right age baptised in Bray.
As Edmund Winder - Elizabeth's husband came from Bray, and because he was the executor to Thomas Dawson's will, I assumed that the families were close and had associated because they had both come to Burnham from Bray.
However my Elizabeth's married name was WINDER, so it looks like she is the daughter mentioned in the will of your John.
Can we swap email addresses as we appear to be related, at least once (the Dawson's are on my Mum's side & the Goldwins are on my Dad's). ;D

Just a quickie to anyone on this post that is into the Hasler family. I've been researching the Great Waltham Haslers for  years and would love to contact anyone else interested in them.
If anyone knows where the earliest James Hasler (who married Mary circa 1755) came from then I would be ecstatic, as he has avoided my detection for the last 6 years.

Hi
I've got a few Burnham Bayleys on my family tree. The earliest one that I have any interest in is:-

Thomas BAYLEY
----------------------------------------
Birth:   abt 1716, Britwell Farm, Burnham, Bucks
Chr:   St Peter's, Burnham, Bucks
Death:   Feb 1762, Britwell Farm, Burnham, Bucks
Burial:   9 Feb 1762, St Peter's, Burnham, Bucks

Thomas was the son of Thomas & Margaret Bayley of Britwell Farm in Burnham.

Spouse:   Sarah GOLDWIN
Chr:   14 Aug 1730, St Peter's, Burnham, Bucks
Father:   Thomas GOLDWIN (chd. 1698-1776)
Mother:   Elizabeth (~1702-brd. 1764)
Marr:   29 Sep 1755, St Peter's, Burnham, Bucks

Children:   Thomas (chd. 1756-1787)
Margaret (Died as Infant) (chd. 1758-brd. 1758)
   Elizabeth (1760-)
My interest is because I descend from the Gouldwin/Goldwin family.
Sorry I can't fill you in on any burials.
However the freaky thing is that I also descend directly from a family of Dawsons who came from Bray in Berkshire but lived Burnham. The Dawson details are below. Again suffering from the lack of burial references but with any luck the details from one of these families will be useful or at least confirm what you have.

Here's hoping.
(1) 1 Henry DAWSON
----------------------------------------

In 1720 both Henry and Elizabeth were stated as being of Bray.

Spouse:   Elizabeth ROUNDE
Marr:   20 Apr 1720, St Benet's, Pauls Wharf, City of London

Children:   Thomas (chd. 1721-~1771)
   Elizabeth (chd. 1722-~1781)
   Susanna (~1725-)

(2) 1.1 Thomas DAWSON
----------------------------------------
Chr:   24 Mar 1721, St Michael's, Bray, Berkshire
Death:   abt 1771, Burnham Abbey Farm, Burnham, Buckinghamshire

Thomas had lands at Burnham Abbey in Burnham which he left to his sister Elizabeth and brother-in-law, Edmund Winder.

Spouse:   Mary LUDLOW
Marr:   27 Apr 1757, St Peter's, Burnham, Buckinghamshire

Children:   Ann (chd. 1757-)
   Elizabeth (chd. 1759-)

(2) 1.2 Elizabeth DAWSON (my 6xGt Grandmother)
----------------------------------------
Chr:   23 Oct 1722, St Michael's, Bray, Berkshire
Death:   abt 1781, Burnham Abbey Farm, Burnham, Buckinghamshire

Spouse:   Edmond WINDER
Chr:   7 Dec 1718, St Michael's, Bray, Berkshire
Death:   West Oakley, Bray, Berkshire
Father:   Humphrey WINDER (chd. 1696-1739)
Mother:   Ann (-brd. 1740)
Marr:   4 Aug 1749, St George's Chapel, Mayfair, Middlesex

Children:   John (Died as Infant) (chd. 1751-<1781)
   Ann (chd. 1753-brd. 1832)
William (Died childless) (chd. 1756-brd. ~1820)
   Edmond (chd. 1757-brd. 1828)
Richard (Died as Infant) (chd. 1759-brd. 1759)
Richard (Died as Infant) (chd. 1760-brd. 1761)
   Elizabeth (chd. 1762-brd. 1790)
James (Died as Infant) (chd. 1765-brd. 1765)

Buckinghamshire / Re: Beaconsfield marriage 1761
« on: Saturday 29 December 07 17:57 GMT (UK)  »
On the 10th March 1768 Francis Woolhouse was a witness at the marriage of Mary Turner and William Hunt, 'chandler of this parish'.
There were no Woolhouse baptisms at all in Beaconsfield prior to 1764.
There are also no appropriate Turner baptisms, one in 1718 (Courtney Turner)died within weeks and the children baptised in 1737 and 1738 were both called Joseph as the eldest was another infant death.
There appears to be a definite link to the neighbouring parish of Burnham as a John Turner of Burnham married Elizabeth Hutchins of Beaconsfield at Beaconsfield in 1738, but had no children baptised there.
Then in 1763 a William Turner of Burnham married Elizabeth Goodgame of Beaconfield at Beaconsfield.
Worth a look.
Regards
Karen
