... until about 1948 films were unavailable in the shops for amateur photographers.

I don't think that was the case. My father was a keen amateur photographer, and the pictures I've inherited include a number taken during his WW2 service (Army, Northern Ireland).

Sorry for going off-topic, but the unavailabilty of roll films in the shops (in Lancashire) is something I remember clearly.  Maybe they still sold them in the Naafi - a neighbour in the RAF took some snaps of my family in 1946, which was a surprise.

It wasn't taken during WW2 - the headlights would have had blackout cowls, and until about 1948 films were unavailable in the shops for amateur photographers.

But I remember seeing a lorry like this, with the round cabside opening, delivering to a nearby shop in Lancashire, in the 1940s after the War.

Looks like 33 shillings to me.

Before decimalisation 33/- would have been seen as thirty-three shillings - £1 13s.

Looks like Primrose Street, Leith, to me.  It's still there, or was; it's shown on my 1995 street map.

Many thanks, Carole.

You are right of course. I simply assumed there would have been a monument because they were both well-known, with quite wealthy sons.

Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / Scarborough Dean Road Cemetery.

Two quite well-known people (they each have an entry in Wikipedia) were buried in Dean Road cemetery in plot C 33-9, but the site is now just an unmarked grassy area.

They were Edward Bury F.R.S., an engineer (1794-1858), and his wife, Priscilla Susan Bury, a botanical illustrator (1799-1872).

There must have been a monument on their grave, but enquiries to the Friends of Dean Park have revealed nothing.

So can anyone suggest what may have happened to it?  Or anything about it? Please.

Harry.

There were three bomb-craters from early in WW2, high up on the west end of the Binn hill above Burntisland.

They were visible for many years but gradually disappeared, filled up with grass.  What the Gerries could have been aiming for, away up there, always puzzled me as a little lad.  And still does!

I see ——-the U is thinner at the outside than the centre .
Viktoria.

Yes, if the lettering is in a Roman type with thicks & thins, the left vertical would be thicker then the right vertical.

But this badge looks like JS or J5 - and I've no idea what they might mean.
