Australia / Re: Hello from Geelong, Australia
« on: Wednesday 07 December 11 22:18 GMT (UK)  »
Just chanced on this thread and hope all have sorted out the Johnson saga now.  My ancestor was William Bryning (1802-1877) from Middlesex, whose eldest daughter was Sarah Louise Bryning (1824-1896).  She was born in Buckinghamshire, married William Waghorn in 1854 - daughter Sarah Anne (Annie) was born in 1856.  This then ties in with the Johnson story - Sarah Annie married Leander Johnson in Richmond, Surrey in 1885.  Mother Sarah Louise outlived William Waghorn - he died in 1888 - so she emigrated to Australia in 1891 with daughter Sarah Annie, husband Leander and infant.  They arrived in Sydney on 24 Oct 1891 on the ship Port Albert, from London via Melbourne.
Sarah Louise Waghorn died in 1896 in Newcastle NSW.
I have all the relevant census entries for the two Sarahs - except for 1891.  Where were they then?  Surely they will not have sailed from London by the date of the census?
Are there any grave inscriptions etc for Sarah Louise?  My Bryning cousins still living here in the UK would be very interested in the addition and resolution of this Australian line.

Rosie,
Many thanks for pointing me towards that entry which I had missed (the index as served up by ancestry.co.uk had not thrown that up on a straight sarah bryning 1841 entry!).  That certainly is my Sarah as William is a Hair Cutter - he went on to be a fairly upmarket Hairdresser in the West End!

Hepburn,
Thanks also for that one - Lowestoft is a long way from Middlesex - and indeed Foxearth! But could be.

So in order to eliminate/verify Charles Meeking as a link - who were his parents?  Born in Foxearth - must be traceable?  Not however on the IGI.

Suffolk / MEEKING(S) of Foxearth or Sudbury
« on: Friday 29 May 09 15:18 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out the family of Sarah MEEKING, who was born about 1800, and who married an ancestor of mine, William BRYNING, in London in 1823.

I am aware that Charles MEEKING was born in Foxearth in about 1800 - he ended up sireing a wealthy family who took over the Richings Park estate in Buckinghamshire in the 1850s (source 1861 census for Iver, Bucks).  Some family (flimsy) evidence has it that Sarah was related to this family.  So - was Sarah MEEKING born in Essex, in Foxearth, in about 1800 i.e sister to Charles?  If I could get that link it would open up a whole new line!

Anyone shed any light on this one?  I have copied this to the Essex thread as I know Foxearth is strictly in that county, but I am aware that there were plenty of Meeking(s) in Suffolk (indeed were they not landowners/farmers in the 1800s and even one a Mayor of Sudbury?).

Agreed this is a good resource.  But then I am biased as Francis Guy was my g-g-grandfather! So all the many directories and other publications from his works are of great value to genealogists!   ;)

Durham / Re: Grange Farm, Sunderland

Gobbo et al

Thanks for prompt replies.  It is a bit unclear exactly where the various farmhouses were - but Ryhope Grange is the northern lot - which is I think still surviving, and just down the road on the east side was the Grange - now under housing and playing fields.

Durham County Council's GIS on http://www.durham.gov.uk/durhamcc/usp.nsf/pws/gis+-+online+mapping
is marvellous for the early mapping up to the present day. I have used it a lot to find the old farms in the 1850s. Look at the circa 1894-1899 map to see clearly the two Granges.
