London and Middlesex / GORMAN - 44 Hine Street, Burdett Road, Poplar
« on: Thursday 29 July 21 15:29 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for any information for the address 44 Hine Street, Burdett Road, Poplar - which appeared on an admissions record for one of my ancestors.

William GORMAN appears to have disappeared after he admitted his mother into the hospital.  I cannot find an address of 'Hine Street' and wondered if anyone who knows the area can confirm if there is such an address.  William James DUKE was born illegitimately to Mary Ann DUKE in 1859, but took the surname of GORMAN after she married Hugh GORMAN in 1869.

Thanks for all these replies.  For some reason I didn't get emails to say that these replies had been posted.  I have all the info on Mary Ann's marriage and William appears as William Gorman on the 1871 census and had assumed the surname GORMAN after Mary Ann had married Hugh Gorman.  The next year (1872) Mary Ann had another son (Henry) but she was then put in an asylum.  Hugh GORMAN (Father) took his son (also Hugh GORMAN) and moved back to Scotland.

William James DUKE was born in the workhouse in 1859, Greenwich and it is his death date I am seeking.   I know her son Henry was brought up by another shoe maker (Edward Mitchell) but have no clue what happened to William.  I was surprised when I saw his name on Mary Ann's admission records,

The last known whereabouts of William GORMAN is on his mother's admission record to the asylum.  He is listed as her friend (son) of 44 Hine St, Burdett Rd, Poplar.  It was previously thought that William (born 1857, illegitimately as William James DUKE) had emigrated, but his mention on Mary Ann GORMAN's admission record shows that he is still alive in 1899.

I am looking for any information on when and where he died.  I can't find him on the 1901 census and I also cannot trace 44 Hine Street, Burdett Road, Poplar on any map.  Any help appreciated.  I hope this is the right board on which to post this.

Many thanks for the replies.  I'll try and source a contact for the genealogical society that is near to where he is buried incase they can cast any light, having the local knowledge.

US Lookup Requests / William James GORHAM died 1929
« on: Monday 03 June 19 10:03 BST (UK)  »
I am based in the UK but would like to find out a bit more about William James GORHAM whose grave appears on Find a Grave at https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/64130851

I am trying to ascertain if he is the William GORMAN I am searching for, as their birth dates are the same (born 22 Oct 1859).  My WIlliam was born on 22 Oct 1859 in the workhouse at Greenwich, England - the illegitimate son of Mary Ann Duke (later married to Hugh GORMAN)

I cannot find out a birth, marriage or census return for the William James GORHAM who died in USA, so basically I am trying to prove or disprove if he is the one connected to my family.

Stirlingshire / Re: Anderson - Gillon family question

Yes - still researching this ANDERSON/DUNCAN/GILLON family and still on Rootchat.

I haven't been looking at this branch for a while, so will get back on it.  I am now at the stage of checking all the ANNIE Duncans, as she appears on different certificates as Ann, Anne or Annie.  There were two Anne and James Duncan couples in the Haggs/Denny area (an Annie Duncan married a James Duncan).  I think I gave the name John on my original post but in actual fact it was JAMES Duncan who married Ann/Anne/Annie Anderson.  Hope to have more info soon.

My Daniel would have been born around 1799 according to the age on the 1841 census (where he is listed as DAN'L).  I have this so far - see http://gormanfamilytree.blogspot.co.uk/

Unfortunately, his death in 1844 pre-dates Scottish death certificates and there is no record either through the Catholic Records or the Old Parish Records.

I am off to search the records tomorrow so will check all the Janet KERR deaths to check parentage.  There are 7 deaths for Janet KERRs who were born around 1786.  It is likely that there is some connection as all my KERRs came from the Kirkcudbrightshire area.  Robert KERR son of Andrew KERR and Elisabeth McCulloch, was born in Gelston in1776.  He died about 1854, but I can't find any documentation about his death (or an M.I. in Ayrshire)
