Hi folks,

Apologies for my absence, due to a very unpleasant bug which is now receding,

At a quick glace I agree that the King link looks promising. I will need a little time to go through all of your kind responses before offering my final thoughts on that one.

I've been away from this for a few hours and so much has since come in that I need to go through known family info to see how much I can confirm.

One thing that does seem to fit, though, is the possibility that Mary divorced Gorge William at some point around 1939, probably as the result of the Married Women's Property Act 1937, before which it was extremely difficult for a woman to obtain a divorce. I say this because I have found evidence of no less than three different addresses for her at different times of that year. According to other Ancestry trees on which she appears she married a Thomas G Cash in Birmingham in 1957, something I can't currently confirm.

Ancestry is reporting problems at the moment, some of which I am experiencing but I'll be back with some answers as soon as possible.

Wow, a huge thank you to all respondents. No way when I asked the question did I even begin to suspect that he was my wife's grandmother's brother! WE didn't have him on the tree because we had missed the Hunslett connection.
I had been at this for several days and had reached the point where I couldn't see the wood for the trees.
The amusing part of this and the part that has caused all the interest is that George now appears mon my wife's tree while Mary K Haywood now appears on mine.

Thanks Jen for the possible link to King. I don't have access to the 1921 census but there will be other ways to dig into this.

Regards and sincere thanks to all,

Keith

Regards to all,

Keith

There are many records to prove that George William Morecock (1902-1981) was born, lived and died in Birmingham yet I can't find him on the 1911 census despite having tried every mutation of the name that I can think of. Please can anyone see what I am missing or maybe someone with access to the 1921 census can find him there?
What I'm actually looking for are the names of his parents.

Thanks in anticipation,

Keith

I think that divorce in this instance was highly unlikely. I've been advised that until the advent of the Married Women's Property Act, 1927 divorced men were allowed to describe themselves as widowers, as Charles did at his second marriage, though I'm very doubtful that he was actually divorced.

The real nub of the puzzle is that the birth cert for Doris, registered as Perkins Linford did not contain a father's name, which suggests to me that the relationship might have been breaking down by 1909 and that Charles Linford was prepared to take Ann Elizabeth back and even describe her daughter Doris as hi stepdaughter on the 1921 census. This despite the fact that his second wife, Elizabeth Jane Parsons, nee Jones, was still living. She died in 1941.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Joseph Perkins and Ann Elizabeth Linfordm Sheffield

In Birmingham and Sheffield between 1900 and 1909 Joseph Perkins, born Birmingham, sired three children with Ann Elizabeth Linford, nee Latham also of Birmingham, wife of Charles Linford.

The births were as follows:

20 Feb 1900 Annie Elizabeth Perkins, in Birmingham
8 Mar 1905 John William Perkins, in Sheffield
18 May 1909 Doris Perkins Linford, also in Sheffield.

There were so many Joseph Perkins births in Birmingham in the 1860s that we cannot provide a definite birth for Joseph but by 1905 he was living in Sheffield with Ann Elizabeth Linford. Nor can we find a divorce record for Charles Linford and Ann Elizabeth or a death record for Joseph Perkins. We do know that Ann Elizabeth returned to Linford by about 1920.
Please can anyone help?

I have now been able to confirm both Elizabeth Jane Jones's birth and death dates.
She was born on 15 March 1865 and died 4 July 1941 at Highcroft Hospital in the presence of her brother Henry Jones.

Can't find Joseph, but Eliza Jane (reverted to Parsons surname) can be found in 1921

And Eliza is on 1939 register at same address as in 1921. Possible death in 1941

Is her address in 1921/1939 still in Birmingham? I can find no Birmingham entry in 1939 for her.

I'm not surprised tht we're finding no reference to Josph Perkins. I'm inclined to believe he remained in Sheffield.
