Cheshire Lookup Requests / Re: Harrison birth record
« on: Tuesday 01 May 12 14:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi, Yes it does mean George Harrison and Mary Taylor are James' parents and he was born 22nd July 1843 and did not die a month later!

It was only when I put the two certificates side by side (birth cert I had bought and the birth cert a friend had sent me which I mistook as a death cert!) and really looked at the supposed 'death' one I saw what it actually was titled. Then all the information on the two was identical. I'm so glad that now Birth and Death certs have their own special headings and not the old combined one.

I feel, and am, a complete twit but it will make me read things fully in future.

Thanks for your patience and help!

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Re: Harrison birth record - an apology from me
« on: Monday 30 April 12 18:18 BST (UK)  »
Thank you to everyone who offered help & support re the problem of James' birth record. The mystery is solved.

I have to make a huge apology to one and all as today I've looked at both the birth certificate I held and the 'death' certificate too. The birth cert was produced in 2010 and the 'death' cert in 2004. I had failed to see the top of the 'death' cert and only today realised it actually said " 'Pursuant to the Births and Deaths Registration Act 1953' Birth registered in the Sub-District ........ "

So what I thought was a Death Certificate is actually the same birth certificate as I already held but produced slightly differently some 6yrs previous. Deaths certs now have their own unique heading.

So I do apologise to you all for mis-leading both myself and you all. I'm glad to say that this means everything I know so far about my ancestors is still true.

I'm now going to hide away in disgrace! Sorry. Thanks again for all your help and advice.

Hello, sorry for latestness of reply; family party!

I have a birth and death certificate for James Harrison born 22nd July 1843, parents George Harrison and Mary Taylor, in Runcorn; death registered 1 Aug 1843 by mother (by her mark); father occupation fireman on steam boat.

Frustratingly I can't find the other birth certificate I have! I don't seemed to have filed it into my Harrison folder perhaps as I found out he had died so discounted him a while ago. However, I do remember that it had both George Harrison and Mary Taylor listed as parents birth date was April 1839 in Runcorn. The reference for GRO was Apr-Jun Runcorn Vol 19 Pg 210. I will find it out asap!

The certificate I sent for this week was 29 May 1842 and had parents of Ralph Harrison and Martha Mills in Appleton Budworth of the Runcorn Union, althought the GRO reference said Runcorn (I was clutching at straws sending for this!).

I originally had Samuel born 1830, John born 1831, Nancy born 1833, William born 1836, Robert 1837, James 1839 died 1841, and James 1843-1843 (the one I thought was my ancestor). I haven't so far found a George as a son of Geo and Mary but I will look into this also.

Thanks for your continued help and advice.

Hi Sandymc47,

I'm a bit confused as the two James you mention are the ones who were born to George Harrison/Mary Taylor and both died so neither can be my relative.

On the 1851 census with Mary Harrison, James (aged 8), Samuel (21) and Ann (18) are you thinking this isn't the Mary Taylor person as I had always thought it was? It does list James as son to Mary rather than grandson.

Thanks again for your advice.

Hi, the one born 22nd July 1843 is the one who died in Aug 1843 and whose birth and death certs I have.  I did have George and Mary (nee Taylor) as James' parents on my tree but have now removed them as this James obviously can't be my ancestor.

The James who married Mary Ann Roberts is my great great grandad so I think you've either seen my tree or a couple of other people's trees who I've been in contact with. The census with Samuel and Ann is one I did have on the tree until I realised I had the wrong parents but as you say it may be worth looking at these 'siblings' and see what comes up as there is a wide age range here.

Thanks for your help. Always good to hear other folk's views.

James signed the marriage certificate but one of the witnesses is 'mark of Elizabeth Harrison' so this could be either a sister or possibly his mother. Marriage was in the Parish Church of Manchester, Lancs. The other witness is James McQuirk.

I know what you mean about fictitious father's names as my great grandmother gave her grandfather's name on her marriage certificate; took 2 yrs to work that one out!!

Thanks for your imput. I'll look at the witnesses and see if I can get anything from those names. I'll see if I can find a George and Elizabeth Harrison too.

I'm trying to find the birth reference for my great great grandfather, James Harrison. I know his father is called George (from James' marriage certificate). I think James was born about 1843 ? in Runcorn, Cheshire (from marriage and death certs and all census I've found for him from his marriage in 1865 to death in 1920).

I had thought his parents were George Harrison and Mary Taylor but I've now been given a death certificate (1843) which shows the James I had in my tree died at age 1 month! This same George and Mary had had a previous child James born 1839 died 1841/2 but obviously aren't the right family.

I've sent for a couple of certificates from 1842 and 1843 but father wasn't 'George' on any.

Just wondered if anyone recognises any of these details? Many thanks for reading this.

Hope this is okay for you?

Thanks for your input. As you can see its very frustrating! I'd assumed as she was Tipper on her death cert that they had to have married, but am I wrong -  could people take their partners name with marriage at that time?? What would the annuity be from or whom - could it be an allowance for an unmarried woman? I'm surprised this would happen in this time!
