I received this information from a friend today. She is better at searching the websites than I am because I didn't find it.

JOHN BROWN Born abt 1790 in Derryboy, Killinchy, Co Down
married on 4th May 1816, Killinchy, Co Down to
MARGARET STURGEON.
Children
John Brown born abt 1817, Killinchy, Co Down
William Brown, christening 26 Jan 1818, Co Down.

also

John Brown
Christening 19 August 1817, Seapatrick, Co Down.
Parents:  JOHN BROWN
               MARIA FERGUSON

If I have this correct, the Presbyterians "baptize" vs. "christen" so I am not sure which one is correct yet, however the record with John and William showing a marriage in May 1816, and matched with what we believe to be a March 1817 birth, sounds about right.

any opinions?

I've been trying to get that Salmon Arm museum link, but I get no response.

I'd be interested in seeing if there is a pic there, of Elizabeth.

Also,

I've been searching a couple of sites, including paid sites for

Clayton b. 14 May 1904 for his death
Beatrice Irene b. Brant Co. Ontario30 Mar. 1906 for her death
(note: one site has her as "Trine" which is an error)
and
Ruth b. Brant Co. Ontario13 Mar. 1909 for her death and marriage record
(I know she married Ray Hunt and that she is now deceased, all in Brant Co.)

My sister will be retrieving documents from the Brantford Expositor newspaper. Maybe they'll show up there.

as a footnote, regarding the death of Rosilla, in the 1950's my father was a laboratory technologist at the Brantford General Hospital. My uncle (mother's side) was the Pathologist there and they accessed Rosilla's medical record.

While the diagnosis in 1917 was blood poisoning, the description of the symptoms indicated bone cancer. (white cell count etc.) She had an open sore on her spine which might have been skin cancer. So, she carried the last child while suffering from cancer. This likely explains the stillbirth.

In 1995 I did some genealogical research at the Brant Historical Society and at the local Church of the Later Day Saints reading room. The middle name of Anderson for John came up at that time. I questioned if it could have been a mistake, given his wifes maiden name and their son Joseph's middle name. They thought not so I have stayed with that. In the meanwhile I haven't found a record currently to support it so I may be out on a limb to assume it to be correct. Perhaps I should delete that reference so as not to confuse.

I still find it interesting that he got married in Quebec at a relatively young age  after being in Canada a short time.

It still begs the question if John and Prudentia knew each other in Ireland.

I find romance in history to be somewhat less dry than dates etc.

Thanks again.

this has been a very sad story for me to follow. My grandmother had a hard life. All the hopes and dreams of a young bride, likely an innocent country girl of strict religious upbringing came crashing down in 13 short years.

She was very likely destitute or she would not have given up her daughters. It appears she may have kept Elmer or Yairies but we don't know if she was able to keep even him.

Working as a housekeeper (verbal history) she found Joseph Brown, an older bachelor who had cared for his mother until her death in 1895. He was a blacksmith (verbal history) and a land owner, so this young tragic woman decided to marry him. It looked like her life would get back on track when, once again, at about the 13 year mark she became ill. I can only speculate on the personal anguish of a mother leaving her 4,5, &6 year olds to fate.

Then the County stepped in and took the children and dispersed them. My father ended up in Seaforth, a ward of the McLaughlin family. He went out to work at 12 years of age according to his recollection.

In all this it is, in a sense good, that the laws of the land had not developed too far. Both Leila and Lulu knew their siblings. The family actually knew each other although they were distant, having been raised by different families in diverse locations.

The story does not stop there, and I have not posted some information of the living, to protect their privacy.

I am still looking to Ireland to find my great grandfather's family.

Just to re-cap

John Anderson Brown, 8 Mar. 1817 to 18 Nov  1884 (Anderson middle name not proven)

Likely Christened 19 Aug. 1817, Seapatrick, Down, Ireland
(Born "sometime" in 1817 Killinchy, Down, Ireland)

If anyone can dig up some Irish info it would certainly brighten up the search which has had a necessary air of tragedy in the past day.

It should be noted that he married an Anderson. Is it possible his family was in some way related to the Andersons and that he knew Prudentia in Ireland? Did they elope? This could be a great romance yet untold.

Possible breakthrough on John Brown Sr.

Christened 19 Aug. 1817, Seapatrick, Down, Ireland
Born "sometime" in 1817 Killinchy, Down, Ireland

Having difficulty with Prudentia Anderson though.
