Lancashire / Re: sad death of Mary Blundell
« on: Monday 27 January 20 11:58 GMT (UK)  »
I have a large family tree for the Blundells of Birkdale area but I don't see any Marys who fit. From the 1871 census I see her father was John and next door there was a Thomas Blundell (John's brother?). If you can let me know who John's father was I will continue the search.

Have just seen your other posts - John and Elizabeth (Betty)? Not found them so far but will keep looking.

The Lighter Side / Re: WDYTYA - tiny gripe
« on: Saturday 04 August 18 12:01 BST (UK)  »
I am actually enjoying the current series. I found the Shirley Ballas episode very interesting and did not have a problem that not all the mysteries were resolved; that's the nature of genealogy. The subject is rarely a researcher and they are expected to comment on their findings and make a summary so I guess they will inevitably tend to bestow positive attributes on their ancestors. I take that part with a pinch of salt. The best episode this series so far for me was without a doubt the Olivia Coleman one. I would really be interested to see a programme on "The Making of WDYTYA" and would also enjoy seeing a scientist subject - Steve Jones would be a good choice being a geneticist.

London and Middlesex / The Whitechapel Bell Foundry - a glimmer of hope
« on: Friday 22 June 18 10:27 BST (UK)  »
Family and local history researchers with a particular interest in the Whitechapel area will already know that the famous bell foundry, which had roots going back to the 14th century, closed a year ago despite the efforts of those who desperately wished to see it saved. It now seems there is a chance of rescue. If interested please see the following piece

http://spitalfieldslife.com/2018/06/21/hope-for-the-whitechapel-bell-foundry/

There is to be a public consultation today (22 June) and tomorrow. If you wish to make your views known to the developers but cannot attend the meetings, you can send an email to

info@thebellfoundry.co.uk

I personally feel that this wonderful part of London's heritage should not be lost if we can possibly save it and give back jobs to those who were made unemployed. I am not intending to mount a crusade here on Rootschat but I do feel it is relevant to those with an interest in and love for the history of this area.

I caught up with this episode tonight on iplayer. I found it quite interesting despite not knowing who this young lady is. I too thought it was a bit of a leap to assume that the suffragist was militant. Good on her though for putting that as her occupation on the census return but, to me,  it does not necessarily imply she was militant. I too have a couple of certificates signed by E Pankhurst.  The informant on one was my great grandmother and I thought to myself, oh wow she must have met Ms P when she went to the Chorlton-on-Medlock registrar's office but I did not question whether that meant my great grandmother was a suffragist or suffragette, why would it? As someone else pointed out it did feel rather scripted.

The Common Room / Re: Who Do You Think You Are? Series 15, Episode 1 Broadcast Info!
« on: Wednesday 06 June 18 21:25 BST (UK)  »
Thank you for that David. I realised that I wouldn't be able to see the programme tonight here in Scotland but it was only when I saw your post and followed the link I learned of the transmission for us WDYTYA addicts north of the border.

The Lighter Side / Re: Who Do You Think You Are 2018 celebs named

Like several other contributors to this thread I only know who two of these people are. I don't watch much mainstream TV. I will continue to watch WDYTYA as I usually find the stories interesting whoever the subject is. Someone mentioned that it is sad that a former participant, Bruce Forsyth, is no longer with us. That is true and don't forget also John Hurt and Robin Gibb. I can think of several people whose family stories I would like to see featured: I think Tony Robinson would make a good subject (I don't think he has appeared on the programme, if he has I missed it), also geneticist Steve Jones as he would add a very interesting slant to the programme.

Sorry I am unable to add anything on Nina Gwendoline and I see that the original post is from some years ago but could I please ask if you ever come across a link between the Beynon and the Mellish family I would love to know. My 2xgreat grand uncle was George Beynon Mellish born Finsbury, London 1823. The name Beynon is not that common and I have no idea why he was given this name. It is not his mother's maiden name. Maybe there is a link somewhere back in time. Thank you and good luck in your research.
