Once again, thanks for the thought Nanny Jan.

The deaths & burials of Charles Pugh & his sister Margaret Pugh are not mentioned in any of the following:

the Parish Register for Aberedw or the Parish Registers for the City of Hereford.

the Memorial Inscriptions for Aberedw or the Memorial Inscriptions for the City of Hereford.

As to newspaper reports, I have neither the money nor the time to pursue that line of enquiry any further.  Having found Charles Pugh's death reported in half a dozen London newspapers (all reports being the same), I can do no more.

I simply live in hope that one day someone, perhaps even myself, will stumble across the much desired burial entry by chance.

Yes, the death of Charles Pugh was reported in about half a dozen London newspapers; however, they were all exactly the same as the report in the Gloucester Journal.

As yet, there is no suggestion that Charles Pugh had any relative in London; however, as the printer of the Hereford Journal he had friends, acquaintances & correspondents in London.

Although Charles Pugh was not a rich man, he lived in very comfortable circumstances & could easily afford to travel to London whenever he so desired.

I live in hope that one day someone, perhaps even myself, will chance upon the discovery of his burial.

Thanks for the thought Nanny Jan - but the answer is no - there are no mentions of London places in his Will.

Charles Pugh made his Will ten years before he died - at a time when it can be proven that he was living in Hereford.

There are good reasons to suppose that Charles Pugh died in London when simply visiting London. It is very unfortunate for me that he made the mistake of dying away from his home in Hereford & away from his native parish of Aberedw in Radnorshire.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Burial of Charles Pugh in 1788
« on: Monday 05 May 08 02:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I'm hoping for a miracle!

I am desperately wanting the burial of Charles Pugh, the printer of the Hereford Journal.

Although it is impossible to believe, there was no obituary for him in his own newspaper - even though his sister Margaret Pugh inherited the newspaper upon his death.

The Gloucester Journal dated 2nd June 1788 recorded his death:

"Thursday morning died in London, after a few days illness, Mr. Charles Pugh, Printer of the Hereford Journal".

His spinster sister Margaret Pugh proved his Will in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury on 12th June 1788.

Charles Pugh was not buried at Hereford - although he had lived at Hereford for 30 years or more.

Charles Pugh was not buried at his home village of Aberedw, Radnorshire.

I suppose that he was buried in London - but where?

If by some miracle, someone happens to know where Charles Pugh was buried in 1788, I'd be so grateful if they would tell me.

Here's hoping for a miracle.

Radnorshire / Aberedw - Pugh family - 18th century
« on: Monday 05 May 08 02:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

Is anyone researching the Pugh family of Aberedw - 18th century?

I'm trying to resolve several problems about Charles Pugh, who (I think) was born in the 1730s at Aberedw, Radnorshire - either as the son of Jacob Pugh or the son of John Pugh.

Charles Pugh died in London in 1788.  His sister Margaret Pugh (spinster) died in Hereford in 1817 (aged 71 years, according to the newspaper report).

From the Wills of Charles Pugh & his sister Margaret Pugh, I know of the following family members:

Margaret Pugh, widow of ?

her children
John Pugh
Charles Pugh (died a bachelor in London in 1788)
Margaret Pugh (died a spinster in Hereford in 1817)
Mary Pugh - married Thomas Parker of Builth in 1775 (their children were Mary, Frances & Margaret Ann Parker)

I am especially wanting to find the following:

the baptism of Charles Pugh - probably in the 1730s.
the burial of Charles Pugh.
the burial of Margaret Pugh (who was not buried in the city of Hereford, although she died there).

From the Wills of Charles Pugh & his sister Margaret Pugh, I also know that the family had properties in Aberedw & Llanfaredd in Radnorshire and Noyad in Breconshire.

I'd be pleased to hear from anybody who knows anything about the Pugh family of Aberedw in the 18th century.

Radnorshire Lookup Requests / Bishops Transcript, Aberedw - PUGH
« on: Monday 05 May 08 02:06 BST (UK)  »
I'm hoping that someone can do a look-up for me.

I am wanting the baptism of Charles Pugh - some time between 1730 and 1739 - at Aberedw.

I believe that the surviving parish registers for Aberedw, Radnorshire, begins in 1740.  So, the much desired baptism might be in the Bishops Transcripts.

There should be a baptism for a Charles Pugh, son of Jacob Pugh & his wife Margaret.

There might also be a baptism for a Charles Pugh, son of John Pugh & an unknown wife.

A look-up would be greatly appreciated.

Herefordshire / Inhabitants of City of Hereford, 1757
« on: Sunday 04 May 08 22:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone, I'm new to this site. So, I'm just finding my way around.

Anyway, a friend & I are trying to discover the names of the heads of household in the City of Hereford in 1757.  We have quite a bit of information already - but are in need of more.

If anyone has an ancestor who lived in the City of Hereford in 1757, I would love to hear from them - and hopefully we can help each other.

Why 1757?  A map of the City of Hereford was published in 1757.  Written onto the map was information about the number of houses & the number of inhabitants for each street in the city.  So we know that we are looking for 1,279 heads of households. Do you have an ancestor who lived in one of those households?

Can you help us?  Can we help you?

Thanks for the reply Lydart.

I live in the city of Hereford.  I'm sometimes to be found in the Hereford Record Office - the City Library - and the Cathedral Library.  Do you sometimes visit any of those research centres? Do you have any City of Hereford ancestors?
