Ireland / Fitzgerald moved to England

Hello,

I'm trying to help a friend locate a relative, but the information we have is very little.

We are trying to locate (*) born about 1943 in southern Ireland (sorry nothing more specific).

We have a marriage certificate for him in 1970 in Leeds, Yorkshire.
It says (*) was 27 years old at this point, a labourer, and father Thomas Fitzgerald who was deceased was a Taxi Driver.

We believe he had sisters who were religious, but I'm afraid nothing else.

If anyone could help at all, that would be most grateful.

Paul.

Hi Ceeoh,

I don't have any photo's (that I know of or recognise) of Joseph & Margaret (Lynn) Smith, I have plenty of Mary Ann their daughter (my great grandmother born 1881) and I have a photo of all Mary Ann's children, so you might be able to see any resemblance there.

I do have an odd photo, its a picture of my Mary Ann with a lot of other woman and a man with a beard smoking a pipe, looks like a trip or boat trip that had come back, but I wonder if any of that crowd were related in some way, unfortunately my remaining living family don't recognise anyone else on there - could be another Smith - who knows!

My aunty has a very vague memory of visiting her great grandmother (Margaret Lynn/Smith) up "Middlesbrough way", she thinks it was Middlesbrough but I'm more inclined to say Guisborough. She said she remembered this old lady who scared her a little, and she smoked a pipe !!   I'm now in two minds if it was Margaret or not, as my aunty was born in 1929, how she could remember her great grandmother at that age I don't know - as I had Margaret Smith (Lynn) dieing in 1930, could be wrong as there's that many Smiths - I really need a death cert for Margaret + Joseph to prove.

If you can PM me your email address (don't know how to do that yet!) I'll send you what I have over, might be interesting for you, might even see some Smith resemblances!

Are you based around the Yorkshire area at all, could maybe even meet or compare notes, I live in West Yorkshire but can travel.

Paul.

Hello Ceeoh,

Thank you very much for your reply, this also confirms what I've found too.

I did also find him in the grout household and found Mary and Charles Grout marriage, as you say it's a total mystery as to his birth.

I did find it another mystery why in the 1871 census when Joseph married Margaret Lynn, they were down as Wingrove-Smith.  That name isn't on the marriage certificate or anywhere else other than that census - baffled.

As much as my curiosity to try get as far back as I can, I'm wanting to find living relatives as well, as I don't have any information or photo's before my great grandmother Mary Ann Smith (married Sutcliffe).

Maybe it will remain a mystery!

Hi,

I know Smith is a bad name to research, but that's what I'm blessed with!

I have a Smith family living in Guisborough, they did travel a bit for work - mining I think.

I have the head of the family as Joseph Smith and he married a Margaret Lynn.  By the turn of 1900/1911 they had a lodging house at 93 Westgate, Guisborough - I've been told this was a Boyes shop later in time.

I have Margaret Smith (Lynn) dieing in 1930 in Guisborough, but as there are a lot of Joseph Smiths I couldn't be sure of his death.

They had many children:

Joseph, Charles, Mary Ann*, Emma, John, Isabella, Florence, Margaret (Maggie), Ralph and Alice.

My branch stems from Mary Ann Smith who married a John Henry Sutcliffe, they then resided in Castleford West Yorkshire.

I'm a little stumped on trying to bring the family forward, and only have information for my branch and another branch Margaret Smith.

I do have some old photographs of Mary Ann in her later life and most of her children if you would like to compare or see any family resemblance.

Any help or information would be really appreciated.

Thanks
Paul.
