Lanarkshire / Re: John BOAG C1780 Scotland
« on: Saturday 16 April 11 17:32 BST (UK)  »
Thank you so much, Ambly.    This must be the right Margaret as I have her dying at "Wester Meadowhead" & buried in East Chapel churchyard.    Is it Wester Meadowhead of West Meadow Head as you say - I don't know enough about Scottish place names to be sure.    Do  you know if there are records for this churchyard which might give me more info?

I have John born on 5 Feb 1806 but in Uphall.  When he died on 11 Mar 1863 he was single and a Pithead man.

This had helped me pin down a more accurate date of death of John senior and I very much appreciate you giving time to hlep me out.

Regards
Jeannette

Hi Ambly

According to his daughter Catherine's death certificate, John had been a "wagon driver".  Most of his male descendants also worked on the railways in some form or other.

Lanarkshire / John BOAG C1780 Scotland

Any help would be gratefully accepted in tracing John who was born in Scotland about1780 and died there some time between 1824 and 1860.  He married Margaret Williamson in 1805 in Uphall, West Lothian and had 9 children - John, James, David, Agnes, Margaret, Thomas, Mary, William & Catherine.   Margaret was born about 1782 in Uphall and died 30 March 1860 in New Monkland.

John has eluded me for many years and to track him down eventually would be such a thrill.

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Re: THOMAS BROWN/BTS FORMIDABLE

Thanks to both Liz and Hanes for the very helpful hints/info.   I will get the Will and also try to track down the Somerset & Bath Asylum records and let you know how I get on.    Thomas is my husband's g.grandfather and my own g.grandmother died in an asylum in Abergavenny in 1920 and I recently obtained her records which included a photograph of her.  Although it was sad to think she had ended her days in such a place, the records noted that she was always singing so I take comfort that she seems to have been happy.   Hopefully, I will be as successful in finding Thomas.

Thanks again
Jeannette

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / THOMAS BROWN/BTS FORMIDABLE
« on: Friday 15 April 11 18:08 BST (UK)  »
Would be extremely grateful for any help locating date of death of Thomas Brown born 26 Nov 1852 in Portishead & also records of his service aboard BTS Formidable post 1878 (when he left the Navy to get married).   In 1881 Thomas & his wife, Rebecca, lived at 37 Village, Portishead but in the 1891 & 1901 censuses Rebecca was "head" of the household.   I cannot trace what happened to Thomas after 1881.   I have found the following - "Thomas Brown of Stuart Cottage, Portishead, Somerset tailor died 26  February 1894 at the lunatic asylum Wells Administration (with Will) Bristol 16 April to Rebecca Brown widow" - not sure if this is the right Thomas Brown, or which asylum he died in, and any assistance would be much appreciated.

Not sure if I can help, but my family name is Boag and I have ancestors in Lanarkshire, Scotland, and Norwich, Norfolk.    If you feel there may be a connection I would love to hear from you.

Best wishes
Jeannette

Reference Library / 1901 Leftovers: OCCUPATION QUERY - 4966_065_033
« on: Thursday 20 August 09 13:13 BST (UK)  »
I have transcribed this 1901 Census page for Monmouthshire  ready to file but cannot decipher 2 occupations and would be grateful for any  help or suggestions.

The fourth entry for Sarah A Francis gives her occupation as  "Ho   ............. (Domestic)".   Is it "home" or "house" and what is the second word?

The tenth entry for Ann Hopkins gives her occupation as "Tin Plate Mill ........".   It looks like "Open...."     Again advice on this would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Anne
One site which might help is http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~monfamilies/llanfrecprt.htm
Like you, I am interested in the Francis family living in Llanfrechfa.   My great grandfather was Benjamin Francis b15 March 1849 who married twice.   His first wife was Elizabeth (surname unknown) and they had one child, William George b1872.  His second wife was Ester Ann Roberts and they had 11 children - Henry b1872, Leonard & Sarah Ann (twins) b1885, Leonard b1888, Stanley b1890, Ivor b1892, Sylvanus b1893, Blodwen b1895, Elizabeth b1897, Arthur b1900 and Elsie b1902.

Are we researching the same family?

I don't have an Ann but the other children were -
Elizabeth c 1814
William c 1816
Samuel c1819
Maria c1823
Sarah c1825
John c1828
Martha c1830 - died 21 June 1870

There is a grave inscription in St Peter's Portishead as follows -
Thomas (c1738) & his wife Mary (c1765), Mary Ellen (1858) & her parents Thomas & Martha.  Also Mary Coombs b2.1.1836 d14.3.1868"

Thomas & Mary are the parents of Thomas Brown (b19 May 1831), husband of Martha Player and g-parents of Mary Ellen.   Mary Coombs (nee Brown) was the sister of Thomas Brown (b19 May 1831).

This info may not be of interest to you as it mostly relates to the Brown family (my husband's maternal ancestors).   If you have any information on Brown I would be most grateful.

I  have been told (but don't have the documentation) that a Joseph Player married  Mary Dowting/Doughting at St James, Bristol on 25 March 1811 - could this be our Joseph & Mary?   They had children baptised (Susannah, Elizabeth & Martha - but no record of Mary).  There is also reference to the name Battman in relation to the baptisms.   Does this make any sense to you?
