273 Squadron was part of the official escort for AVM Keith Park (SEACs Air Commander) when he visited Singapore in late 1945. He also visited Hong Kong late in '45. So that may correspond with your correspondance.

The official accident report for the crash:

http://www.ukserials.com/pdflosses/maas_19980615_ze732.pdf

The reference on the UFO site to the aircraft *disappearing* (the link to which I won't bother posting here) from radar is no surprise when the aircraft was in a steep dive.  Afraid it's another case of adding 2 and 2 together and coming up with 5!!

EDIT: BTW as the crash occured outside the limit of British Territorial Waters, that may explain why he is registered as "abroad".

Yes, the Release centres were where service personnel officially got demobbed. They handed in any equipment and uniforms they had, and got their discharge papers, demob suit and any monies that maybe owed to them.

I have a copy of In Oriente Primus: A History Of The Volunteer Forces In Malaya & Singapore by Moffatt (and Paul Riches). It's not really a history as the narrative part only has a handful of pages. But it does list every volunteer with a brief biography.

PM me your email and i will send you the relevant entry and the relevant section of the history.

For his time with 466 Squadron you can go through the Squadron ORB:

http://naa12.naa.gov.au/Login.htm

click on Guest

then search for 466 Squadron

look for A2217    22/49/ORG
[Overseas Headquarters, RAAF, London] Formation and movement of No 466 (B) [Bomber] Squadron - RAAF [flew Wellington IIIslater Halifax Mark 6, from Driffield later Leconfield and again to Driffield- disbandoned 26/10/1945 [0.75cm]
1941 - 1945
Barcode: 4269858

That should give you all 1534 pages.

Skip to page 31 for the first mission entries.

but get you started:

10.12.42 - Joined 466 . Already a Flying Officer, but no mention of where he came from. With that rank he was either an instructor uptil then or had served in another squadron

13.1.43 – Flew first mission. Aircraft (Wellington HE389) on mining mission. Pilot was Wing Commander R E Bailey

Royal Airforce Volunteer Reserve No. 466 (RAAF) Squadron; awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

- How can I determine what this was for and when it was received?

Received bar for Distinguished Flying Cross for participating in the bombing raid on the Gestapo HQ in Norway.

Wallace Stanhope GAUNT (116793)

Received DFC 15 October 1943 (no citation in the LG but if you ask over on http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/index.phpthen someone maybe able to provide it

Bar to DFC. Citation on link below:

http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/36964/supplements/1205

Gaunt's Mosquito on the Gestapo raid was DZ633, and there is a picture of that aircraft in the Osprey book Mosquito bomber/fighter-bomber  By Martin Bowman

There is no mention of Gaunt in the 617 Squadron ORB, so though he may have volunteered for it, he doesn't seem to have been taken on strength:

The aircraft in question was Spitfire AR395. The other aircraft was not a Spitfire but a Dominie (NF889), with all 6 of its crew also being killed.

A couple of links with details for you:

He is listed as being with the 158th Battery, which was fighting, I believe,  in the East African Campaign.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_African_Campaign_%28World_War_I%29

The details of the cemetery suggests that a number of people who are buried there died at the military hospital. Which would suggest that he was wounded or became ill, and then was evacuated to South Africa.

Hi Clwyd

I have a number of references to the Burma air campaign. It would be good to exchange information, though at this stage I would need some more from you.

I will PM you my email address
