Hi,

Thank you both for your replies. In answer to you first Valda, yes I have obtained a copy his will. I only found it recently, and I am still working my way through it (I'm struggling with the hand writing). It was from that that I was able to deduce an approximate date of death. Thank you for taking the time to look for it.

In answer to your question Dawn, I'm hoping to find anything I can. I have marriage details for him in Newington, but nothing to give me any clues as to where he was born. The age you gave me from the burial record suggests he was born about 1763-4, and there is a 1764 baptism on the IGI in Stevenage which could well be him; but I'm not sure where to look next to prove it.

The church in question was demolished following a fire in the 1880's, so unless the vault was cleared before for some reason, I don't suppose there will be any other records then.

Thank you both for your help, and thanks again Dawn for finding the record for me.

Matthew

Thank you for all of your help Dawn. Is it likely that there will be any other records pertaining to this burial; if it was an uncommon event?

Thanks,

Matthew

Hi Dawn,

Thank you very much for that; it is really appreciated. Do you have any idea how common it would be for people to be interred in this church's vault?

Thanks,

Matthew

Hi,

Thank you both for your replies. Hopefully they will turn up on Ancestry in time then. The person I am trying to find is named Bruton Robins. I think he died February/March 1808. He his younger children were baptised in this parish as late as 1803, and he still lived in this area when he died.

Thanks,

Matthew

Hello,

I am looking for burials in the parish of St. Mary Magdalen, Old Fish Street, on and around the year 1808. However, I can't see anywhere that I can access them. The recordset in Ancestry's browsable collection for this parish that ends in 1810 actually ends around 1796 for burials. I thought that maybe burials stopped after this date, but I have since found a website that has transcriptions from 1813-53, so I assume burials were still taking place in 1808. If anyone is able to point me in the right direction, I would be very grateful.

Thanks,

Matthew

Hello,

I've recently found an ancestor's baptism from the late 18th century in the British Lying-In Hospital in Holborn. The record contains patient details such as the date that the mother came in. It also gives both parents' names and the columns 'occupation', 'age' and 'settlement'.

Occupation is the father's occupation; I am fairly sure that the age is the mother's age; And as most of the entry refers to the mother, I assume that the settlement refers to her, as opposed to her husband. However, I've read online that married women took their husband's parish of settlement - was this always the case? And is the parish of settlement the parish where the person (or their husband) originates from, or could it just be somewhere that they lived for a period of time?

Thanks,

Matthew

Hi Lyn,

Have you looked on Google Street?

If you type the name of one of the roads into Google Maps, you will see that on the left-hand side of the map there is a little orange man at the top of the zoom bar. If you drag and drop him onto the road you are interested in, you are able to see the whole street in photos.

I've just looked at Burghley Road, Camden. The houses are still there, although I couldn't easily find which is number 5. It does tell you on screen roughly which number you are outside. You can zoom in to see door numbers, if the houses have them. I could see that 17 Burghley Road was numbered, and I moved down the road to where I would expect 5 to be, but I couldn't see a door numbered 5. I haven't looked for the other addresses, but you should be able to find them, as those areas are covered well.

Good luck,

Matthew

Hello all,

I've had a look at the possible Thomas Courtney records, and the father's occupation of the Silverton family does make that look promising.

I've found a website of someone else's research into the Pollard/Hine families at http://www.nextech.de/genealogy/harnwell/ - The author doesn't appear to have researched Eliza Hine Pollard's parentage, but it names her grandmother on there. A lot of the earlier generations look like best matches from the IGI, and do come with a disclaimer. I will get in touch with them, as they have a lot of information from death certificates etc.

I'm going to mark this thread as completed now, as thanks to all of your help we have gone above and beyond the original subject.

Thank you again all of you, it really is appreciated.

Matthew

P.S. Thank you Jan for that link, a very informative site.
