London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Workhouse in London
« on: Wednesday 09 July 08 23:06 BST (UK)  »
Here's a good site for workhouses: http://www.workhouses.org.uk/

I don't see Hanwell on the list, but I did find my gt grandmother there in the 1901 census. She was institutionalized after she gave birth to my grandmother because she "wandered off and left the baby". She's described as a "lunatic." You can write and ask for the records, which I haven't done yet. She was there for 20 years before she died, so it was a pretty sad story. Wikipedia has an article about the place if you want more information .

Thanks Charlotte. Many of the family "memories" have proved to be wrong, although it's great when they are verified by research.

Yes, the gt. gt. was born in Devonport when his father was at the Picquet Barracks and the gt. was born in Brixton. I just meant that the story of being Welsh could be further back than the family thought.

Buckinghamshire Lookup Requests / Please find Wiliam Woods, born in Amersham
« on: Friday 27 June 08 23:50 BST (UK)  »
My 4Xgt grandfather William Woods is in several census, including 1861, as a coachman domestic born in 1811. His birth place is given as Amersham and his wife Ann was born in 1816 in Manchester. In 1841 he was in the Picquet Barracks in Devonport, and 61 and 71 he was in London.

I can't find any record of him being born in Amersham. Can anyone help? Family lore says his grandson, my gt. grandfather, was Welsh, if that contributes anything. I've found family lore somewhat inaccurate!

Correction--you said gt gt. so I guess your father or mother is my second cousin. But definitely related.

We're cousins then. Your gt. grandfather went to London--I was looking him up the other day actually--and mine, his brother, went to Glasgow. Send me your email and we can compare notes. It was Thomas. I left my file at my daughter's house so couldn't look it up/

Hi Beverly
Sounds like you are one of my cousins--or second cousins. I'm descended from Isabella Niven and David Tod (or is it James--I don't have my material with me right now and can't remember). My branch (gt. grandfather)  left the farm at Gorthy and went to Glasgow. My grandfather and his brothers emigrated to New Zealand. I have more information if you would like to get it.

Devon Lookup Requests / Re: Please find birth of Sarah Cockram
« on: Wednesday 25 June 08 21:13 BST (UK)  »
This is all amazing thanks! Yes, she was married to Thomas Smith in Marylebone in 1857, so that was probably her living there in 1851. I'm still not sure where she was in  1841 though if she isn't the 35 year old living with James and Charity. There's another Sarah in Cheriton Fitzpaine, working on a farm, so that might be her. I believe she died in the 1860s and Thomas married again to Elizabeth. Her daughter Flora Grace Smith (gt. grandmother) died in an asylum in 1916 after (fortunately) giving birth to my grandmother. My grandmother married a New Zealand soldier and moved to NZ. I'm in Canada.

Thanks all for your help. I'll take some time to look at all your replies and info.

Devon Lookup Requests / Please find birth of Sarah COCKRAM
« on: Wednesday 25 June 08 13:47 BST (UK)  »
My gt gt grandmother Sarah Cockram was born in Stockleigh Pomeroy (according to 1861 census--she married and lived in Berks.). I'm trying to find which Sarah Cockram she was. According to 1841 only one SC was born in Stockleigh Pomeroy and she is too old at 35. However, IGI says she that SC was christened in 1824. Her parents James and Charity were married in 1811. All her siblings appear much younger. Is it possible the 1841 census is wrong and she was really 15? Orig. document definitely says 35. Could someone find her birth date for me?
