James drowned in the Waitaki river in 1862 at the age of 40 according to the other information I have. So that would make him born in 1822, however he was on board the whaling ship Mary and Elizabeth in May of 1834 so that would make him 12 years old. The Mary and Elizabeth picked up ex convicts from Hobart to sail the ship - James, may have been one of these men. If he was a convict he would have served at least seven years in Hobart before joining the crew of the whaling ship. So how old was he - I feel much older than the 40 years stated on the documentation I have but I don't know. Cheers

Hi

My family interest if the Brown family from Invercargill.  I happen to came across a Nellie Grieve Young  who married Arthur Brown.  She was, I believe also married to Phillip Worledge Young.  Does any of this ring a bell?

Hi Graeme

I know the photo's you speak of. My grandmother was Margaret Sarah Heath - daughter of Emma and Thomas Heath.  My husband and I are travelling around New Zealand - we are at the top of the North Island at the moment.  Coverage for the internet is limited hence the delay in replying to your post. Most of my information is in storage in Invercargill, however I do have some on the computer.  Can you enlighten me as to how the Benson comes into the family.  I understand Paiki was changed at times to Pike or Pyke.  Is this your understanding too.  I will endeavour to send my private e-mail address.  Cheers Margaret W

Hi

I don't live in Waimate - I'm a Southlander, however I have seen the photo's at the Marae.  My grandmother is standing beside Emma.  Can I ask who you are.  I am willing to share the information I have if you are interested.

Cheers Margaret
