Sadly not on ancestry (except library) at the moment so can't contact tree owners.

Indeed yes was he a King or just chose a common name to hide his real name?

Apologies - yes 1851 census ( I put 1841).

Thank you for all your thoughts. Even if you confine King just to Tetbury and later Pencoyd it's a very popular name as is William and Mary. Thus which is the right one. Add in other areas and John King seems to be everywhere.

As mentioned in another thread (somewhere here, Pencoyd? - only have mobile access ) I mentioned male King tan very easily so born overseas connection seemed likely, but I'm not so sure.

Another  thought is a criminal record so he wanted to hide his birthplace thus chose born on sea?

It's not knowing or at least a high probability that bugs, but such is life.

Once again thanks.

1841 census gives born on sea.
I can understand his father being on the sea but why his mother?

Wiltshire / Born on sea - why

John King  1803 born on sea lived in Tetbury. Quite possibly parents (William 1767 Langford and Mary 1774 Downton)  and ancestors lived in same places. So seeking thoughts why he would be born on sea?

Thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Ledbury or Tetbury

Firsty if my commemts seem brief it's only because I'm composing on mobile

Thank you all for your comments. I've never been happy with born at sea. Having downloaded quite sometime back  People of Tetbury in 1735 by Elizabeth Janson and concentrating on King I'm more convinced he descends from there. Proving it of course is another matter.

I'm aware of the nephew - thanks for all the census info most helpful - and along with James King (most likely brother of John) are other avenues to revisit
 Thanks Ray

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Ledbury or Tetbury

Revisting John King 1823. Previous Ancestry gave birth as Tetbury or Tedbury. His father was the brick wall born at sea. Later printer friendly show Ledbury with in brackets underneath Tetbury.  However looking at 1840 RG12/2057 John King is given as what looks like Ledbury but I'm not sure particularly as the county is Gloucestershire.  Is it Ledbury?

Breconshire Lookup Requests / Re: Abersychan nieces Pettey to Bond

Thanks to you all. I'm out and about so will reread and check later but
memory is there was a Chase Hy? son of Joseph on 1891 census. If so as it's the right age that could be Charles?

It looks like Laura is well sorted and Emily most likely

Williams second marriage to Charlotte Edwards brought forth a child Ada (My Nan s Sister) Can I draw any significance between that and Laura Ada or just coincidence?

Thanks Ray

Breconshire Lookup Requests / Abersychan nieces Pettey to Bond
« on: Tuesday 23 June 15 09:25 BST (UK)  »
My understanding: On the death of Elizabeth Pettey nee Bond it seems the older children stayed in the Bristol area and William Pettey (1862 Shepton Mallet) moved to Brecon later remarrying in Abergavenny area.

I'm interested in trying to trace the two youngest: I have a Emily and Laura Pettey in 1891 living with Joseph and Charlotte Bond at Abersychan.  They are down as domestic servants but are nieces to Joseph who is brother to their deceased mother Elizabeth Pettey nee Bond.

However from then on I have no trace of them except a possible marriage between Laura Adam to George Waters in 1891.

I wonder if you have any info?

Thanks Ray

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Re: can trace family on board but not father
« on: Friday 15 November 13 17:03 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks, occupation is given as Rolling Mill as does 1880 USA Ohio census

So far as I can gauge father William died pre 1840 - between 1841 - 1851 so far as I can gauge he went with others from Shepton to Wales working on farms.

I did wonder if he worked his passage as a seaman, but the passenger list for George Petty does say USA - to USA rather than England to USA - however his name does follow Agnus and family so?

Thanks _ Ray
