Kilkenny / Re: Mary Carey abt1824 -- may be Mary CAREW

In looking at the daughters' marriage certificates it seems that Mary's maiden name may be CAREW instead of Carey as indicated on daughter (Eliza's) death certificate. On Mary's own death certificate parents are indicated as unknown.

Also going from daughter's marriage certificate it seems that Mary's husband died sometime between 1876 and 1882.

China, thanks for the information. These are the best scans that I have, not having the originals myself. Other photos I've scanned the backs of and fortunately most of the others were named, or my great aunt who is in her 90s was able to tells us who they were. There are other photos in the collection taken at studio of A. H. Harvey in Geelong, [Victoria, Australia] which is where the family lived when they first came to Australia. These both have some faded notation on the bottom but even when looking at the originals we weren't able to decipher anything noteworthy.

I was wondering if location would alter the fashions any -- both of these families came from Ireland before meeting and marrying in Australia, but again, I suggest that means the clothes would be of an older style than at time of photographing.

The Griffiths Valuation Index for Co. Kilkenny, Ireland 1849 &1850 shows Philip CANNON as tenant in "Wind Gap", Pennefather's Lot, Parish of St Johns and this seems a likely match. No luck with any other records as yet however.

I obtained scans of these photos some time ago but would like to be able to determine approximate dates to narrow the likely subjects. I'm assuming they are husband and wife as it's the same studio and thus would both be from the same time.

Assuming my guessing of the likely subjects then the photos would have been taken between 1850 and 1866.

OR, could have been taken between 1876 and 1930 (most likely late 1870s-1880s).

I'm also guessing that 'formal' wear for portraits is likely to be in an older style rather than contemporary fashion.

Kilkenny / Mary Carey abt1824
« on: Wednesday 27 August 08 08:27 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for information on a Mary Carey who married Phillip Cannon. Her death certificate, indicates she married in Kilkenny about 1843. Her death certificate lists parents as unknown. Philip and Mary immigrated to Australia in 1854. Two of their three daughter were born in Kilkenny -- Mary Ann about 1850 and Eliza about 1853.

Any clues of where to even look greatly appreciated as I haven't had much luck with Irish records although have been able to locate a lot of information after the family's arrival in Australia.

Many thanks,
Brian.
