Many thanks for this great new resource.  What treasure trove. I can see me spending hours going through all the info, but right now it's bedtime.

According to White's Directory of 1857, Henry De Paiva was a woollen yarn spinner, situated at Walkley Lane, so perhaps De Paiva Lane was in that vicinity. Walkley Lane runs from Beck Lane towards Dewsbury.

Hi Neko,

Littletown is in the valley, between Heckmondwike and Cleckheaton and Hightown is about a mile up the hill from Cleckheaton.  Birstall is about two miles from Batley . Littletown and Hightown would be about 4 to 5 miles from Batley. hope this helps.

The Common Room / Re: What kind of building is this and where??

It look as though it was originally a church or maybe a private chapel.  There are crosses on the doors and what I think was the sanctuary rail still in place. At first I thought it has been converted to a museum but on second thoughts it does give the appearance of being lived in.  Looking at the roof, wonder if it could have been in a crypt, though that doesn't fit with the idea of being lived in.  No idea where it is, but it's certainly an intriguing photo

Hi

I did not send for either of these certificates. They are copies which are dated 1944 & 1948.  All I can tell you is that both refer to the sub district of Dawley in the Registration District of Wellington.  I did look on Genuki which says that the Wellington district records are now in the Telford and Wrekin District.  Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Good luck.

Don't know if this will help, but I have two births in Dawley, 1875 and 1903, and both certificates show Wellington, Salop as the registration district.

Apparently you cannot access the webpage on this link (I tried it), so I will tell you how I got to it.   Go tohttp://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~nzbound/lists.htm.   Under Auckland heading click on " Auckland area inward passengers"  This will take you to search page for name of ship and immigrant.   Hope this works okay

The local newspaper would have been the Spenborough Guardian but I don't know where the archives are held. However the paper is still going strong, the address is:
1, Market Street, Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire, BD 19 3RT.
so they may be able to help. Sorry I don't know their email address.  Joan
