World War Two / Re: St Malo 1940
« on: Friday 06 October 17 16:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi there. I came across this thread by accident, and I realise it is several years old, but this might be of interest to somebody.
My father was evacuated from St Malo to Jersey in 1940. He was in the RAMC attached to a Canadian regiment. Many years ago we were on a family holiday in Jersey and took a boat trip to St Malo, which brought my Dad close to tears. He told us that the order had been given for "wounded and medics only" to get in the small boats, and he said the Canadian soldiers were left behind, with a bagpipe playing, as the German tanks rolled into town. I took this to mean that they were taken prisoner, but I know nothing more about that. He never talked about it before or since that day, although he did talk quite a lot about his time in North Africa, Egypt and the Holy Land later in the war.
Hope that helps someone!

Hi there. Sorry I went quiet, I was going back over my Coatsworth stuff all weekend!

I can send you my postal address and my e-mail address in a personal message, if you want to send me more about the Tupper side. I really only need Sarah's ancestors though and I think you already told me as much as you know about them, thank you.

I plan to go to the National Archives in Kew on Thursday, which is also where my nearest Latter Day Saints Family History Centre is located. If I can't get anything further there, I might have to go to Kent, to the  Archives which are in the  library at Canterbury Cathedral.

I'll let you know if I find anything relevant.

Thank you so much for all that. Lots to be getting on with!
I'll keep in touch. Where are you? I'm in London.

Thank you for your message. Sarah Tupper was my 3 x Great Grandmother, so yes please, I would love to know more about that side of the family.

I'm still intrigued by the convict story, but I think it is probably impossible to find out any more about him.

I haven't done much work on my tree lately, but you have prompted me to take a further look at it. There are posts on this thread I didn't follow up at the time, so thanks for the nudge!

Thank you. I found them, and then found them on FreeBMD too. Sadly, I can't tie them to the family I'm looking at.
Thanks anyway,
Molly

Thank you for that.
I can't get FreeReg to find them at all. Do you have their full names or dates of burial?
If not, don't worry, thanks anyway.

Family History Beginners Board / copying a topic to a second county board
« on: Monday 02 February 15 11:48 GMT (UK)  »
I started a topic in Berkshire, but now find the family have connections to the West Bromwich area.
Is it possible to copy the topic and replies to a second board?

The Topic was "Caleb Dodson and Eliza Coster"

Thanks again for your input.
I may well send for those certificates. There seem to have been a number of children, any one of whom might have been the first to go to West Bromwich. I haven't tracked them all down yet. It all takes a long time, but I won't give up.
Cheers, Molly

Thank you.
I can't link Caleb to West Bromwich, but according to FreeBMD Eliza and her son Frederick William both died there in the last quarter of 1878! He was only 19, so perhaps she went there to nurse him and caught the same illness? Who knows?

Why Caleb would go from Reading to West Bromwich in extreme old age and die there, goodness only knows! These mysteries are what keep me going!
Thanks for your help.
