Family legend has it that we are descended from the Wolf of Badenoch (Alexander Stewart) who was the 4th son of King Robert 11 of Scotland.   My GG mother was a Stewart from that area.  However maybe best best to let sleeping dogs (or wolves) lie as he was a notorious ruffian.  He is also reputed to have had 40 illegitimate grandchildren.

It does give the family history a bit of spice though.

Hi Alba

I spent a day the the Scotland's People Centre a few months ago.  As you say good value to search as much as you like.   There is a cafe in the next building (New Register House) so that you don't have to waste time going far at lunch time.   The Scottish National Archive Centre is nearby as well.   You will need a photo if you are going for the first time.  Let me know if you need any further info.

You can view wills free of charge at the National Archives of Scotland building  situated behind Register House which houses Scotland's People records.
Wills can be viewed on their computer up to 1901 and thereafter you have to give advanced notification and they will dig out what you need see.   I have been able to view wills up to 1939 without payment though you have to pay for pages to be printed off should you want copies.   New readers require a photo when registering.   Let me know if you need any more help, directions etc.

Hi again Prophetess

Didn't scroll down far enough to notice that everyone had responded to your board message and I sent you PM.   Hope to be there.  Have not been to any meet-ups before but they sound a hoot.

Hi again

Thanks for clarifying the Kings Temp.   The Kings Hotel is still there and does not seem to  have changed much.   Do try the chat room - wonderful searchers in there.

Hello Alan

I often used to cycle down to Ellwyn Glen with friends and have picnics up the burn or go with the girl Guides to work for our hiking badges.  I wondered if it has become overgrown now like many of the paths we used to walk along in that area.   There is a photo of one of the bridges in the glen in the Old  Gala club book of photographs and also an old postcard in Ebay.

It will be very pretty at this time of year as the new leaves and blossoms are appearing.

Cheers Rev
