Lancashire / Re: William Barker born abt 1816 married in Wigan 1838
« on: Thursday 01 September 22 15:33 BST (UK)  »
It was William born 1817 Preston's marriage certificate I sent off for, he was married in 1818 and records showed register office but certificate stated St Mary's Chapel which also says Roman Catholic. This is in Standishgate. My dad and his siblings went to St Mary's Catholic school which is still there and the church next door although not sure if same one as in 1838.  Witness 's were Ellen Hurst who must be Mary Hurst side and Charles Brierley.

I do not have the certificate for James his father, I might send off for that one if they have it next week and see what it states. I did look up and in 1803 you had to be married legally in the \church of England then in the Catholic church which explains why I can find two records, I shall keep looking as the children will be in maybe in two but depends on where everyone was born, although can find quite a few in Wigan baptised at the Roman Catholic Church of St John's.

Thanks again

Maiden Stone, just looked and yes on the 1841 census William says born in county, then on 1851 says Wigan, 1861/1871 both say Preston which I do not really get.

I did think at one point like many others that his father sas Samuel Barker but doubt set in a few weeks ago so sent off for his marriage certificate hoping it names his father and I was right to have doubts as it says James Barker Soldier. I know up to William everything is correct, now working out about his father and the Preston birth place change.

Many thanks for your reply, I did notice you put Baker and not Barker but just thought maybe typo error  :) so no worries.

Thank you Maiden Stone, Ive just looked at William Barker and it was in 1861 that he changed birthplace from Wigan to Preston. Looking at all the others I can be sure that the enumerater did not just do a ditto on them. On all these census's William is in Wigan.

Im busy checking military records to see if I can find anything about him.

Thanks for all you information.

Yes there is lancsann which is his wife Mary's father. Its William Barker's father I am at a loss with.

I also have James Hurst on the 1851 lodging with another family but not far from where his daughter is living.

trish1120, yes I have thought that James might not be fromLancashire, although most of this family seemed to come from Wigan.  If William was baptised in a catholic church then maybe I just have to be more patients.

Thanks

Hi,

wondered if anyone could help. A few weeks ago I had a feeling that I might have gone down the wrong pathway in my family tree, I never could find a birth for William who at first I thought was 1813 and Father Samuel Barker. I decided to send off for William's marriage certificate to see if it named his father which it did, it was a James Barker profession given as Soldier.

From 1841 onwards on the census's William had alway said he was born in Wigan, then on the 1871 it changed to Preston ?? which I find very strange. I still cannot find a baptism for William, having said that the marriage record was down as Wigan Register Office, Registrar in attendance, however the certificate says St Mary's Roman Catholic Chapel which did not come as a suprise as most the family were catholic, my dad actually went to St Mary's school which is near the church.

My question is any ideas how I might trace this James Barker.

While Im looking I found a marriage in Wigan in the 1790's and the place of marriage is given as Palatine, Wigan. Ive never heard of this before, could this be another name for Catholic Church or something completly different.

William Barker married when he was 24 and to a Mary Hurst who was 28. One of the witness's was an Ellen Hurst so assuming her sister, I shall be looking into this further today.

Thank in advance,

Susan

Thank you yes Thomas Finney Sharrocks was a brother, as was Betty Heywood Finney born 1800 died 1803, also Elsie born 1804.

There are two baptisms for Micaiah one in 1802 at St Peters Bolton le moors, and the other one 28th July 1811 at the non conformist church new jerusalemite, but if this is him then mothers name is Ellen not Eleanor and he wasborn 1813 not 1811, so little confusing all around.

Just a very strange one.

Thanks

Sorry, it's late my brain was saying sleep.

Micaiah was born 1813 says Radcliffe  his sister 1798 Darcy Lever. Parents are Benjamin Sharrocks and Ellen Finney.

I have these two in my tree with very unusual first names, I have Micaiah  few times, couple of baptisms with different spellings but same person, and also a marriage in 1831 to Alice Openshaw, its after this I lose him, with such an unusual name thought it would be easy to find record but he just disappears, as does his sister. Moriah though could quite easily become Maria etc.,. I have tried all different ways of input to try and find where he might have gone but no luck so far.

Any Ideas would be gratefully received. Although I have baptisms I am wondering about the familys background and where they might have come from in the past, that being a work in progress .

TIA

Susan
