Graveyards and Gravestones / Re: Churchyard permission ?

As a former churchwarden, I echo what grahamsimons said. Sadly, we are one of the churches that is currently kept locked as we have some irreplaceable brasses and there are those in the area who will steal them for scrap :( We are always glad to open up for visitors given some notice and take great pleasure in showing off the brasses we are custodians of, as well as talking about the history of our wonderful church and showing off the finds from when we had our drains replaced under the watchful eye of a local archaeologist (quite a few tiny coffin handles, a civil war (probably) musket ball, assorted other metalwork and so on).

All our graves were moved to the sides of the churchyard but have been recorded and the records shared on findagrave. Always worth a look!!

Again, thank you all. Hard to say if any of these are any of my family - but worth filing away in the "don't know yet" file!! I'll be doing some investigation on these, that's for sure :)

You guys are incredible! It is an unusual name, generally spelt wrong on first acquaintance and often mis written as Stedman or Steadman even after I've spelt it out. I find the reference to John Stedward intriguing because I know that there were members of my family in Glasgow in the Springburn area at about that time - there is no Springham area but again an easy mistake to make. As to the others - who knows? Certainly worth my investigating further, getting certificates etc because I think that's the only way that I'll figure out if (for example) Jane Stedward is the same person as Jane Steadwood!! Wow, just, wow!!

Australia / Birth of William J STEADWOOD South Australia or NSW

Hi.

I've found the death of this poor little chap in Sydney NSW in 1868, he died aged 14 months and was buried in Balmain Cemetery. His mother's name was Jane, no father's name given. This is the first positive evidence I have for people with my surname in Australia in the 19th century. I think my great great grandfather John Steadwood may have been born in Boston, SA but I just don't know. So, could someone have a look for the birth of William and whether there is any more information on either him or his mother.

Many thanks

I think I've sent you a PM as I now have Isabella's certification of death and will send you details if you don't already have them. Of course, i may not have, I don't send PMs very often!!

It occurred to me this morning that,  if they could afford proper burials and monuments, then they may well have published an obituary in the local papers. So, I've contacted the Strathspey and Badenoch Herald and am awaiting a reply. I've got a directory of 19th century Scottish papers somewhere so I'll see which ones published in the Laggan/Newtonmore area and contact them as well. The archives may have been moved to Inverness or (possibly) be on Am Baile although I don't know if they go as far South as Newtonmore.

All the best!

Hi Audrey

I've found a reference to a Donald McKillop living on his own at Croft Cottage, Laggan in the 1901 census. He was aged about 91 at that time - less than you give for death age a year later but still possible? Catlodge looks pretty bleak, looking on googlemaps and the streetview, it is to the North of General Wade's military road, it looks as though there might be the foundations of a house but the resolution isn't good enough to tell. Croft cottage is listed as a historical monument - a 19th century croft - on the Canmore website. Croft cottage is west of Laggan, there's a white house beside the main road with the older croft building slightly further on.

There are two McKillops buried in Banchor Cemetery, according to www.deceasedonline.com, its free to search but then £1.50 (ish) per stone that you want to look at.

My uncle married a McKillop from the Western Isles, that seems to be the original stronghold of the name so I'll keep digging, my brick walls just keep getting thicker, its nice to have something to do!!

All the best for the New Year

Gordon

Hiya

Long time since this was posted so don't know if you've made progress on Isabella. Anyway, do you know when she was born? This might help - I've had a look at the records for Old Laggan and New Laggan and some of the other churchyards in the area but no McKillops buried in any of them - or at least no memorials recorded. Might the crofting records give some indication of exactly where Donald was crofting?
