Australia Resources & Offers / Re: Arrival from Cape Hope ship about March 1862
« on: Wednesday 24 January 24 09:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hiya Maddie,

Patrick John Stokes arrival in March 1862 is from an newspaper obituary of his - in his later life he became a well known figure in the early days of Labour and unionism in Adelaide. So -   it could only be "hearsay" from relatives etc. I have failed to find him as  migrant - think more likely as a sailor - as he came from 4 years work at Cape of Good Hope.  The mention of "Ben Ladi" was me clutching at straws - finding what looks like a John "Stoate" arriving definitely in 1862 - so our deciphering of ship name wouldn't tally - if the Ben Ladi was a later ship.   Might just be a red herring anyway - not my man at all.  Feel I am going around in circles at the moment.

Thanks a lot Debra,

Great link!  Have found the "S" names for around 1862 (checked end of '61 til mid '62). The supposed date of arrival March 1862 was in an obituary/newspaper, so not necessarily precise.  No obvious Patrick John Stokes, however have found one very vague possible in May '62 - will attach snippet.  It seems to say something like "Stoate?", John,  - then gives "capacity" and name of ship.  The name of ship looks like something .. "Bin"... something, and am wondering if this could be a ship arriving not from UK, but possibly S. Africa or other ports?  Will be interested to see what anyone else can decipher.  Also it is dated May '62, so think I am clutching at straws???   Damn it (ooops sorry for the language) - I have decreased my image as much as possible and refusing to accept it - "over 500 kb".....   will try again another way...

Looking for Patrick John Stokes, in obituary said to arrive in South Australia March 1862 - having  spent previous 4 years working in Cape Hope.  Originally from Co. Tiperrary, Ireland.  Went on to have very interesting life involved with the early Labour movement in SA.   Have tried databases SA Maritime museum, Archives SA, but finding mostly info on "migrant" ships.  Am thinking that he could have arrived as a sailor, not as a migrant as such.  I have good amount of his later life.    Any ideas anyone?

Hi Neale,

Have looked at State Library... State records... not well versed in how to use them, but not coming up with hardly anything around the relevant time - except for a couple of photos in 1928 and 1938....   I wonder if there are any aboriginal records??  or records specifically relating to them???

Australia / Pinky Flat Adelaide 1920's
« on: Tuesday 19 December 23 09:53 GMT (UK)  »
Pinky Flat was  an area on the banks of the River Torrens in Adelaide.  There is early history of it being a very central area for Aboriginal camps, hunting, meeting place  - certainly up to about 1912 when Council and politicians decided to "Banish" all aboriginals from living within city areas. Though there have never been any buildings on it, it is even now a venue for many entertainment events.  What I am interested in is any information whatsoever around the 1920's - 30's.  Trove has very little, - certainly it seems to have been an area where the "Pink wine" - - cheap wine drinking was very popular - but I am finding hardly anything at all as to "Happenings"  of any sort, whether from an aboriginal or "white-fella" point of view.  Does anyone have any ideas at all?? Maybe the State Library would be the way.???
