Hi T7 - thanks so much for your post. I'm looking for John Fletcher who was my grandfather. My very elusive grandfather! I've got lots of info from the war but am really struggling to get back further than that with him, so anything regarding his rugby club days would be hugely appreciated! ttfn Vaz  :)

Hi Millie  :D

A google search brings up a Flickr photo (dated 1910) of Kingsdown Road which states that it is now known as Beechcroft Road.

Hi  :)
Despite being a young 21yrs old (approx) at the time of her marriage, maybe she was a widow at the time and therefore would have had a different birth surname? Unlikely but possible... ::)
Cheers

Hi Ken

So are you a relative? When I was in my teens/early 20's in Chippenham there was a "bikers" pub called The Borough Arms (subsequently renamed The Gladstone Arms in a succesful attempt to create a new image for itself) which was flanked by Flower's Yard. The yard covered an emormous area which has been redeveloped into housing.

If you would like any photos of the area as it is now I'd be happy to take them & forward to you.

Best Regards

It does seem odd to have just the 1 child so far on in the marriage doesn't it?!

Good to hear you're well, I've emailed the stuff...let me know if you don't receive it.

Kind Regards

Hi Craig - Long time no speak!  ;)

Devizes & Wiltshire Gazette Thurs 28th April 1864
Marriage write up for Mary Jane
"April 21, at the Abbey Church, malmesbury, Henry Alexander, third son of John Neek, esq. of Lancaster Terrace. Regent's Park, to Mary jane, only child of Joseph Canter, esq., of the Abbey Row, Malmesbury"

So there you have it - "only child"!

Do you still use the same email you did in 2010 when I emailed you some ODY stuff? Let me know & I'll send you screen shots of the newpaper stuff I found (includes Josephs wifes death notice).

Cheers

Hi Alan

Preshute indices all cover 1606-1837. Looking for WOOLDRIDGE/similar there are only the two William marriages which you know about. There are no baptisms or burials at all for that surname/similar.

Ogbourne St George indices
Burials 1579-1837 only 2 Mary WOOLDRIDGE/similar One in 1691 (too early) and one in 1740 (dau of William & Mary)

My suspicion is that Mary and Elizabeth are married to 2 different Williams, this is because of the two couples producing children as per below in OSG. There are no William WOOLDRIDGE/similar marriages in OSG 1700-1715 so I think both couples are likely to be the ones you refer to married in the next parish.

There are no relevant baptisms 1700 until...

Children baptised to a William WOOLDRIDGE/similar & Mary:-
1711 Oct 21 William
1713 Dec 02 Simeon
1715 Sep 25 Mary
1717/18 Feb 23 Ann
1721 Aug 20 Elizabeth
1727/8 Jan 28 Susanah

Children baptised to a William WOOLDRIDGE/similar & Elizabeth
1716 Sep 23 John
1719 Jul 19 Lydia
1722 May 29 William
1724/25 Feb 22 Thomas
1726 Apr 25 Elizabeth
1729 Apr 13 Sarah

For what it's worth there were 5 William WOOLDRIDGE/similar burials between 1738-1782...a common name!

I hope this lot makes sense ::)

Me again...

Regarding the Coroner's Inquest Report, I would telephone the Wiltshire County Coroner's office and ask them if/how you may be able to request a copy. I know there are next-of-kin issues so you will have to take advice from them.

I'm currently waiting for a similar report for my Grandmother who died in 1971 in Liverpool, and I had to provide certificates proving my direct link with her  :-\

Good luck

Hi brohenwr14

What a very sad event in your family history, my heart goes out to anyone with a connection...

I googled your grandmothers name and came up with a newpaper report from the National Library in Singapore. As it is a relatively recent event, I'll just post the link here and you can take a look yourself. The Death Indices for Trowbridge for the relevant quarter confirm the childrens deaths.
