England / Re: Name variations - help please

Hi natp

I don't know about Gertrude but certainly Josiah does get changed to Joseph including times later than the period you mention.

Many thanks for the extra info Elwyn.  The spelling variations are a pain tracing him and his offspring in the UK never mind in Ireland!

Many thanks kingskerswell - now you say Drumlane, that does indeed look right and good to learn of the two Drumlane possibilities.

Much appreciated  :D

I was hoping someone may be able to tell me what and where this place name is in Co. Carvan.  I have a Bernard Roden aged 32 in the 1911 census (Tooting, London) who gives it as his bith place.

Please see hopefully attached image.

Many thanks

London and Middlesex / Re: Are there records for deed poll name changes?
« on: Monday 09 July 12 21:38 BST (UK)  »
Many thanks Tony & Valda for your replies.  I'll check for an enrolled deed poll record - but as you suggest, I'm not optimistic that I'll find anything.

Thanks again ... Simon

London and Middlesex / Are there records for deed poll name changes?
« on: Sunday 08 July 12 20:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

I have a Bernard John Roden born in 1905, Twickenham.  He appears in the 1911 census in Chelsea as the nephew of Owen & Emma McGrath.

Someone on Ancestry says that Bernard changed his name by deed poll to Bernard John McGrath.  This would certainly fit his circumstances above and that Bernard John McGrath named his son Bernard John Owen McGrath, and a family story that there was a name change.  Unfortunately, the person on Ancestry has not been on the site for over a year so I can't get in touch with them.

Do you know if there are records for deed poll name changes, and if so, can they be accessed? Bernard would have changed his name sometime between 1911 and when he married in 1930.

Many thanks ... Simon

Rutland Lookup Requests / Re: Suter
« on: Monday 14 May 12 13:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi PaddyBear

Can't help with a look-up I'm afraid and this is perthaps a bit obvious - but have you considered spelling variations?

I only say this because I have the name Soutar in my tree and the number of spelling variations make life very interesting!  One such variation is Suter - although not in the Rutland area.

Cheers ... Simon

Many thanks Dawn and mshrmh for your replies.

Dawn - the 1911 census is unfortunately only adding to the confusion!  Parish records are a probably worth a look although I suspect that there may not have been many of the children baptised.

mshrmh - you've given some really interesting links there, I'll have a look over the weekend.

Thanks again ... Simon

I'm doing a bit of research for a friend who seems to have an intriguing great grand parentage.  Family members are not keen to talk about it and clearly there was some name changing and possibly partner swapping going on!  The result is that I have a list of 12 births from the indexes that I would like to see the certificates for but don't want to spend all that money on ordering from the GRO. Especially as they may not give both parent names, and what names they do give may well not be true!

Is there any other way of accessing birth certificates (1900 - 1930 era) - eg visiting the National Archives or Record Office or wherever?

Many thanks ... Simon
