Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Re: Richard Elvidge
« on: Friday 23 October 15 21:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi Ian, back on the track with Richard Elvidge and noticed I hadn't replied to your post!!I'm afraid I am not too organised with family history and all over the place with searching etc.I tend to get distracted with searches for others as well, but it all certainly makes life interesting.I will now search for other siblings of Richard, and given his father was a Thomas I daresay this reference to Thomas Elvidge and Martha Robinson Shaw at South Kirkby is well worth a look to see if I can venture further with any extra hints. You have picked up on my direct line with Sarah Elvidges marriage to William Gledhill.Their son William Gledhill born Dewsbury 25 sept 1857 is my great grandfather.I am yet to get his birth certificate but it's on my to do list.I hear there is a huge wait at present for certificates through gro, and as I live n Australia that is a bit frustrating.
Thanks for your imput, I will follow up that link.
Cheers.
Erika

Sorry I should have explained I am on ancestry but can't seem to locate a census, marriage or death for Martha after Richards death.I'll keep at it to see what I can come up with. Might have better luck going through her family's maiden name and trying to see if she relocated.
Thanks again for your reply.

Your reply to my post was much appreciated. Also the knowledge you passed on regarding records of the time.Explains perhaps as you mentioned why I have been unable to access much information.Being Australian I am used to free access to our Trove newspaper archives, which is how I would pursue further research here given Richards early demise.Details often come up in online newspapers like tragic incidents as you suggested, which further add to the family story.I will continue to look for Martha with the hope of finding another marriage and maybe some additional half siblings for Sarah Elvidge their daughter.Once again thanks for your assistance and speedy response to my request.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Richard Elvidge

Hi,
I am looking for some details with regards to a relative who was married in South Kirkby, York.I currently have the marriage banns for Richard Elvidge, born 1802 , Yorkshire West Riding , father Thomas Elvidge. He married Martha Ward, in South Kirkby, banns 10th of March 1823.Unfortunately Richard passed away on 30th June 1824.The only child to this marriage being my ancestor Sarah Elvidge, born 29th May 1823.I was wondering how I could find out how Richard died and if Martha remarried? To date my search efforts have not turned up anything.Though my knowledge of English resources is not great!!Hoping someone can point me in the right direction.I reside in Australia so rely on online records at this stage and visiting records offices in the area is not an option.
With thanks.

Thanks to Allan and Templar for the last few posts.I have been looking at this family a bit more closely once again.Noting that Martha Wrigley and James Henry Wellington married in Gibraltar,(thanks to Hume for this information in a previous post) I wondered why Martha would be there in the first place? I can't seem to find an entry for either James or Martha in the 1871 census. If they were indeed both overseas at this time how do I go about finding a census entry?I would be most grateful for some advise regarding these enquiries.I can recall finding information about the living arrangements of wives and families of Royal Army Military Corps personnel regarding postings in Cork, Ireland some time ago which helped paint a picture of community lifestyle. If anyone knows of additional information regarding the living situations in Gibraltar of spouses and families, I'd be interested to learn more.I am also trying to find additional details about another sibling in the family, Frederick Charles Wellington. The last entry I can find for him census wise, states he is 18 years old and a member of the Royal Army Medical Medical Corps in Aldershot. This is the 1901 census.I have tried to find soldier records, but have no luck to date, so I virtually have no information about his whereabouts from 1901 to his death in 1973 in London, assuming I have the right Frederick Charles Wellington. Once again any feedback or assistance would be appreciated.Thanks. Erika.

Thankyou to both Janine and Carol for your imput. The person you located in Ancestry.com Janine would be me and I'm sorry, I should have mentioned my tree on that site and given a brief description of what I actually have thus far for that family. I was hoping however I might meet someone else with similar family links with the view of swappping additional information. I am still familiarising myself with all that is available online with regards to genealogy records and it certainly is a huge task.My favourites file is full of handy references to date and I just keep adding to it!! I have used Scotlands people before Carol but I wanted to exhaust all other avenues first and thought more experienced researchers might have a few clues about sites to access before I took the step of purchasing more credits.Once again, sincere thanks  to both of you for your replies and advice.Cheers. Lanarkshire / Jean Gemmell Russell 1887

Hi,
Seeking help with some information regarding a great aunt. Her name is Jean/Jane Gemmell Russell and she was born in Cambuslang, Scotland to Helen and John Russell in 1887.Looking for details of a marriage and parental information on her spouse, William Cunningham. Also birth data of children Helen and John born some time before Jean and husband William emigrated to Australia.(I believe Helen was born about 1819 and John 1921).I would be most grateful for any assistance.I am also stuck for information regarding Hamilton Macallister, Jean Russell's grandfather who died in Bridgeton 1881 and was married to Jane Drew Gemmell. He died aged 38 and I was wondering about the circiumstances of his death and if there was a will and what the contents of that document revealed.Thanks.Erika.

Thanks Judith,
I did see that entry in the Electoral records and I had not come across this type of file listing before "emergency housing".Have you seen this term?I assumed it meant housing commision accommodation, a term I am more familiar with.
Sue your comments about the names I had noted.I did see on the Victorian discs that David's father is listed as David Malcolm Hamilton. On the Inquest discs and the death certificate the David I was seeking is listed as David Gordon Hamilton.I did not get the certificate for Cecilia however as I was looking into this situation for one of the daughters who was sent to the Ballarat orphanage. She knew the name Hamilton and thought that both the names Gordon and Cecila figured in the mix somewhere, so when I looked at the inquest listing I knew this was them.I thought if there was going to be any additional information regarding the mother's maiden name and children listing it would be with the father's details.Thankyou also for the war record link. When searching for records I access another site, but this link you provided is much easier to negotiate and I will definitely use it again.I will as you suggest also look into Cecilia's family in Western Australia.I hope they have some data readily available online. The entries at Springvale were quite a find and I was rather surprised when they came up so readily.Once again my thanks to you both for your time and assistance.Just got your new message Judith as I was sending this off, good to have that explanation about Camp Pell.Got the Edith Crowley and David Malcolm Hamilton from the discs at the library. Will try and see If I can identify any of the relatives who contributed family notices to the newspaper.Another clue about relatives may be that the person I know said one of the older sisters who was not sent to the orphanage travelled  frequently to Dimboola in Victoria .Could just be a coincidence rather than anything significant. The plot thickens!!Cheers.Erika.

Thanks so much Judith and Leanne for your replies and information.I believe there were a few children in this family two of whom were sent to the Ballarat orphanage.I don't know who reared the others.Given the families listed in the notices, I don't quite know why this was the case and that they were not at least placed in a Melbourne orphanage near relatives.Once again my appreciation for you efforts. The Rootschat community always have members who can source so much data at a moments notice and those of us who post messages are always very grateful to you all  for your interest and willingness to assist. Cheers for now. Erika
