Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: How Welsh am I?
« on: Saturday 29 April 23 19:21 BST (UK)  »
I know very little about the Ancestry DNA testing other than that the results are dependant on the number of people around the world who have already taken the test.

My interest is simply that I have a very Welsh maiden name - Howell - but despite tracing my tree back to the 1790s have not found anyone who was actually born there (presumably because they left Wales at some point prior to that to find work in the English midlands).

Would the DNA test tell me if I do actually have Welsh ancestry?  And if so would it single out a particular area of Wales?

(Please bear in mind my lack of knowledge and keep explanations to words of one syllable!)

Many thanks

I think you need to get further back than the 1790s, as this was the period when the "Industrial Revolution" took off and millions of people moved around the British Isles.

I would love to go back further but am not optimistic as my family were impoverished nail makers and as such only appear on parish records - and have very common names for that area (Edward and Howell).

thanks again.
I must admit I am a bit boggled by some of this!  I can`t justify the expense at the moment but perhaps I will ask Father Christmas to chip in at the end of the year

thankyou.  Having read all of that I have decided the results I am likely to get aren`t worth the cost of doing the test

jc26red  I was very interested to read that you think the name Howell may come from Hole or Cave dweller. My ancestor from the 1790s lived in Stourbridge which is very close to Kinver where people actually did live in  Caves until relatively recently!

The Common Room / Working class clothing?

When I discover, for example, that an ancestor was married in 1740 I like to imagine what they might have been wearing at that time.  However a google search for Costume 1740 invariably comes up with images of what was high fashion at the time and what the wealthy would have worn.
Does anyone know of a resource which shows what the working classes/trades people wore during different times?
I`m assuming that the poor wore pretty basic garments irrespective of the date!

I didn't realise there was another Kerby still lurking in Berkley Court!
There must be a death for her, at least we have a better idea of her age now.
Jon

yes, Isaac spent most of his life living and working in Coleford, Glos but went back to Clerkenwell after his wife died - possibly to be near his brother

Brilliant - you`re a star!
I assume she was looking after the Kerby brothers who were very elderly, but possibly not related to them

Many thanks

Another piece in the puzzle has arrived today.
I now have the death certificate for John`s brother Isaac Kerby who died 3 months after him in June 1851 at 2 Berkley Court. Guess who registered the death!  Yes, it was Mary Goleson  (very clear on this certificate) and this time although she was still present at the death (and still made her mark) her Residence is 9 Albemarle Street Clerkenwell.  Is it possible she was there at the time of the 1851 Census?
