Dear All,

Sorry for the delay in responding to your posts but I have finally admitted defeat! - I just cannot find when William Russell Whitehair left for the USA on the Ships' Lists. Admittedly I don't know where he departed from, but I have gone through every departure that I can find, to as many destinations that I can find, to no avail.

Neither can I find any application for a passport, although not all years of application are available......but I will persevere!!!

Regards
Sue

Crikey! You have been so busy Carole & Keyboard86 - thank you. I need to write all this down to see exactly how this lot fits together....and to see exactly how many wives we have in the loop at the moment and whether any of them were bigamous!

I have been out all day so haven't had a chance to look at the Ship's Lists yet, but I will as I would really like to know when he went to America!

Hope to get on to this tomorrow.

Regards to all.

Many thanks for the additional bits of information, folks.

Keyboard86, I am not sure whether the family in the 1861 census is the same family or not - the names are correct, they were living in a similar area of London, but the place of birth for both William and Amanda being born in Bury, Suffolk is a bit confusing as, to my knowledge, Amanda was born in St Pancras and died shortly after giving birth to Amy Georgiana's birth in 1870. Amanda's death was in 1871 St Saviour (Southwark), aged 26, in Southwark - same area as the 1861 census that you found but my William R wasn't actually a widower at that time.....interesting conundrum!

1851 census - I hadn't heard of Emily, but looking at births on FreeBMD I found these:
Births Mar 1851   (>99%)
Whitehair    Emily Adeline        Bermondsey 4 9
Births Mar 1855   (>99%)
Whitehair    Emily Matilda        St Pancras 1b   110

The name Emily Adeline caught my eye as my Grandmother was Adeline Agnes Haines...after her great Aunt perhaps, but on the other hand there is Emily Matilda, named after her paternal grandmother, Matilda nee Brown. I can only surmise that Emily b1851 might have died as an infant and 2nd Emily was named after her..........I need to do some more research I think!

Thanks again for everybody's input and for the details from the marriage cert., CaroleW.

I think I also need to check the ships' lists to find out exactly when William emigrated to America - a bit too late to start that now, so a job for the weekend, I think.

Dear All,

Thank you for 'resurrecting' this thread - I had hit a wall and had left this part of the family alone for some considerable time, so I will need to dig out some more detailed, old paperwork.

I do, however, have William Russell's parents as George Whitehair and Matilda Brown (married 20th July 1845 Old Church. St Pancras), as mentioned by Trish and I think that Mary Ann Whitehair, the wife that it looks as if William R left behind when he emigrated, died in 1854 Bermondsey (although I have no proof of this as yet). I also have an older brother for William R. - John Whitehair bpt 30th June 1816.

Fishingtackle, was his son William born in America, son of Elinor?

Regards
Sue

Hi Jackalyn,

Thank you for your posts. I am afraid that at the moment I am not able to spend much time on the family history stuff as I am preparing to go to my son's wedding in Vietnam! However, your Exeter link makes very interesting reading, but coachworks do not ring any bells!

The fact that there are familiar names such John Alexander (my father) and Ida (my great Aunt). Ida was a Tremeer, who married into the Sellers family - to Walter Paris Sellers, makes me think that there is possibly a link, but I don't know what!!!

Hopefully I will have more time to investigate further on my return, but if you find out anything further in the meantime............. ;)

Ooh er!
But no David Thomas?  As his widow, Sarah,  remarried in1898, it may be that David was the son of William...but would Rhiw be Caerphilly?

The trouble is that there are literally 100s of deaths for David Thomas pre 1898!
When Sarah married William Snell, I think she must have been  about 63 (the entry in the family Bible says that she died in 1909 aged 74), so I have been looking for deaths of David Thomas's in that age bracket....nothing obvious found yet!!!
Still looking!!

Thanks Heddwch.
I will Google it and see if I can find a picture of it and maybe a list of past Landlords.

Hi Briwales,

You are not intruding at all. I am not sure whether the T Salathiel is the same one or not, but it may well be. The dates that you have found would indicate that he was born in 1852 which would fit with David T's date of birth.

Also I know that there were 2 brothers who were killed in the Cymmer disaster. I must find all these names, which I know I have somewhere!!

What sort of age was Eddie when you were working with him? Perhaps we could work out an approx date of birth and try and link him in to the family - and to think that I thought that Salathiel was an uncommon name!

Many thanks
Sue
