Hi Dave
They have lots of old photos of Newcastle at Newcastle Library, in the Family History section (I can't remember how far afield the photos stretch)- maybe they have similar at Hanley, or even in Tunstall library.
It might be worth a try.

Cheers

Rob

My Lye surnames are:
Pardoe, Chance, Phipson, Yardley, Skelding, Bingham, Taylor, Westwood

They all link into the Phipson and Skelding branches that moved to North Staffordshire just before 1900.

Would be happy to exchange notes and info.

I googled "rifle volunteer" Stafford and got the link to the defunct pubs.   It is the one I thought and it is the "right" one referrd to in this thread:  the "Rifleman" used to be the "Rifle Volunteer:"

Staffordshire
Parker's Burslem Brewery Co Ltd - Stoke on-Trent
Stafford, 20 Common Road Rifleman (formerly Rifle Volunteer Arms) Lovely leaded front windows, including one with 'PARKER'S ... ALES'.

There's a pub called the Rifleman in Stafford, on Common Road near Marston Road.
I last went past it about 5 weeks ago and the lease is up for grabs.

Hi Angela
I had already found all Samuel's kids from later censuses and birth registrations, but it is good when someone else has got the same results through independent research, it reassures me that I haven't overlooked any sources.

Will forward my Rushton line separately by email.  Hopefully you will find something of use to you.

Rob

Hi Anjo

Wow, thanks for that long message.
The reason I was going to look at Ellastone in the Record Office is because William, Samuel's son was born at Northwood Calwich in 1861.  I was told by a very old lady in Swinscoe that this is the little row of terraced houses opposite Northwood Farm.  I'd taken this to be part of Ellastone, but there appears to be very few RUSHTON's listed in any databases for Ellastone, so will try the others, as you suggest.
I'm lucky that I live halfway between Ashbourne and Stafford, so research on this shouldn't be too much of a problem.
I'd be willing to do  any look-ups you might have outstanding, within reason, of course.

Lunch break is almost over - got to get back to work!

regards

Rob
