I tried all the suggestions... and the London Metropolitan Archives with no luck. I did establish that it was possibly (nothing concrete though and this doesn't seem likely for my relative, but that might be wishful thinking!) a home for unmarried mums  but beyond that nothing.   Sorry to be no more help.

Is your Eliza Smith b: 1876 Caunton actually Elizabeth May Smith baptised Caunton 10 Nov 1878? Father William & Harriet Smith of Beesthorpe Hall Lodge. Father's profession: gardener.

My interest is the Jebb's of Beesthorpe/Caunton.

Regards,  Dave

Hi no my Eliza is definitely Eliza, born 1876 in Caunton, parents Lydia and Hawthorn Smith.  Eliza is my great grandmother, her son Joseph Markham Smith was my father's father.  They were gypsies.

Found a bit more but it's not helping. Joseph's first cousin, Moses, son of Moses Smith and Susannah Sheriff was married to a Elvira Holland, supposedly from Flintshire. I wonder if Catherie and Elvira were sisters...

All help gratefully received

Thanks Cheryl

I sent away for birth cert for Woodfine:

Here are details; WOODFINE SMITH b. 11 April 1875. Longton, Staffs. father; Joseph Smith Mother: CATHERINE SMITH nee HOLLAND. Like Joseph, she signed it ' X ' (Her mark).

So Catherine/Coralina etc was a Holland. Joseph always claimed to be born Leicester and Catherine/ Coralina in Coventry, but I know the Hollands had strong links to Leicestershire too.

Any thoughts people?????   Sasha.... do you know anything about this lot?

Toni, thank you... That really looks like a possible. I'll order the cert, if it's not them I will just add it to the pile of "well it might have been" certs I have for my gypsies.

Thanks for looking. I had already looked at TL's stuff, and know they aren't featured in there.
I know the dates are right... and the parentage. All info I have (and have checked in the census) is from The Family tree of Woodfine Smith by Josephine Tombs, published by RTFHS. Zachariah is the son of Woodfine 1780 and Sarah Boswell, and sibling to Sentinia AKA Centy AKA Henty Queen of Black Patch. As I said I know about Joseph but nothing of Coralina/Carolina/Catherine. I think she might be Black Patch too but can't find a trace of her other than she is in the census as wife of Joseph.

Hi I hope some one can help please.

I am looking for the mother of Woodfine Smith, born 1875 in Longton, Staffordshire. She appears in the census named as 1871/Carolina;    1881/Catherine;    1891/Curaleoner;    1901/Catherine.

I know Woodfines father was Joseph Smith, son of Zachariah Smith and Ann, possibly Davis, I can't find a possible candidate fo Mum!

Thanks Cheryl

RG12/524/147 p 4

Is this the 1891 census you looked at? If so John Hunter is described as widower of Wimbby, Hertfordshire.

Sarah is described as single.  Are the Haydens his in laws?  Something very strange here.

I have just found this news story re Vira and Thomas Smith in the Staffordshire Sentinel.15th May 1915.

You have to drag it around a bit and the headline is Van dwellers Quarrel. It mentions an assault on Vira's brother Nathan by Vira.
