Thanks to both of you for help with this.

Sadly, they are not "my" Kerrs.

Hi Abi,

Sadly there are no witnesses mentioned in the register. The entry is simply as quoted by Gener8or.

I don't have anything further on the descendants of James Shade/Shed/Sheed and Jean MacRitchie so I'd certainly be interested in hearing more about your husband's branch of the family.

Hi Stephen,

I've had a look through your names and dates but I'm afraid I can't see any link to my family. Good luck with your search.

Dear Cramond Brig,

I have a connection to the Constable Family in that my grandfather's cousin married James Constable in Kirkcaldy in 1904 and over the last couple of years I have done some research into the Constable Family Tree.

James Constable and William Marr Constable were third cousins in that they share the same great-great-grandparents John Constable 1726-1808 and Ann Thomson of Cupar, Fife.

Sadly, I do not have any information about William Marr Constable or his siblings or their descendants after the 1901 Census but I would be interested
in hearing if any such descendants come forward as a result of your appeal as I would be happy to share details of the Constable Family Tree with them.

Regards

Hi Gener8or,

It seems you may not have received my PM so I will repeat it here.

I have just now found the Marriage of your George McRitchie and Martha French in London in 1803 on Ancestry.

I recognise the two witnesses as sisters of your George McRitchie. There is Margaret McRitchie who goes on to marry William Constable later that year and there is Jean Shed who appears in the handwritten family tree as "Jean (McRitchie) married George Shed". This is the first time I have seen anything to confirm this entry. So thanks for that.

I also have another sister of your George McRitchie. This is Mary McRitchie who married George Stewart, a Sergeant in the 42nd Regiment of Foot (Black Watch). They had a daughter who was married twice and had three children.

I also have a brother of your George McRitchie called John McRitchie but I have not been able to find out anything about him yet.

Hi Gener8or,

Thanks for your posting. There is no doubt in my mind that your George McRitchie d1863 and my Margaret McRitchie or Constable d1859 are brother and sister both being children of George McRitchie and Janet Reid of Dunkeld.

The handwritten family tree produced c1910 mentioned in my original posting gives some clues to support this.

It also mentions specifically that George McRitchie and Janet Reed (sic) were married at Dunkeld on 25 Nov 1773.

It would be good to compare notes in greater detail so I will send you a PM.

Midlothian / Re: Thomas Hume Plumbers Stafford Street

Hi Doddie,

Thomas Hume, Master Plumber 1840-1908 was my great-grandfather.

He was a partner in the firm of Morrison & Hume, Plumbers, Brassfounders and Gasfitters in Edinburgh and Lasswade. They were the plumbing contractors for the building of the Public Baths at 10 Infirmary Street Edinburgh in 1886 which suggests they were involved in quite large scale commercial work.

There is a Notice of Dissolution of Morrison & Hume in 1892 which refers to Thomas Hume of 2A Stafford Street Edinburgh but I am not sure if this was an existing address for the old firm or the address of Thomas Hume's new business.

Later in 1892 there is an article in The Scotsman which refers to Thomas Hume chairing a meeting of The Scottish Plumbers' Society which suggests he was quite prominent in his profession.

The Edinburgh phone book for 1904 has an entry for Thomas Hume, Plumber, Gasfitter etc. 2A Stafford Street.

As far as I can tell three of his sons went into the business. John Hume died in 1906. Joseph Hume resigned in 1911 and emigrated to Australia. William Moffat Hume died in 1925.

I am guessing the firm was sold as a going concern and the new owners continued to trade as Thomas Hume & Sons, Plumbers at 2A Stafford Street until 1975 which is the last time the firm appears in the phone book.

If you would like to send me a PM with your email address I would be happy to share the details with you.

Hi Colin,

I have a connection to your Birrell/Burrell family. My GG-Grandparents were John Burrell 1801-1861 and his wife Janet Aitken whose daughter Elizabeth Burrell married your George Black Birrell in 1852. I am descended from another of their daughters Janet Burrell.

I would be happy to share notes and will send you a PM.
