Family History Beginners Board / Re: James Chapman

Annoyingly I can see Agnes on 1939, as married, but James not with her. Was hoping to get an exact dob for him.  Any idea where he was? Or what he did for a living?

The marriage was 26 Dec 1926, so right at the end of the year, so chances are he would have had his birthday for 1926. As he says he is 25, assuming he has that right, then one would estimate his year of birth to be 1901.

The only one I can see vaguely in that area in 1911 is a son of James and Ellen, living in Limehouse

That link is very helpful - it at least confirms a link with Kent if the daughter Jane was born there (I have been looking for her birth in Somerset)

Looking at the 1851, the enumerator has dittoed "Somerset" for various birthplaces above Bridget, then enters Bridgets as (possibly) Kent, then goes back to Somerset. That certainly indicates a birthplace other then Somerset for her.

My only idea might be Hunts Hemingford - but it doesnt really look as if second word starts with an H either!

Anc transcribe it as East Geminford, Somerset.   Nothing about Kent at all.

Well spotted - I had missed the reference to "Administration"!  So -as you say - no Will.

I would imagine the reason Probate was granted in the name of Stirling Cameron would be because the Will was written in that name.   If that was the name he generally used, then it wouldn't be a case of it being the "wrong" name - you can legally call yourself anything you wish.
As for why it took so long - all sorts of reasons. Maybe his widow just did not know there was a Will, and only discovered some years later, or maybe, being illiterate as you say, she just never bothered with it until it was needed to release some asset or other at a later date.
Or maybe, with the death being registered in his birth name, it took a while to verify that this Will really did belong to the same person.

Have you ruled out these two deaths?

JFM 1899 Wokingham - age 73
OND 1879 Reading - age 53

Sophia may only have been using the term widow for convenience, after being on her own for so long

Thank you,

Why would the sons name be erased ?

Not sure it was, rather just wear and tear, or someone spilt their drink.
