United States of America / Re: James McGhie - stowaway
« on: Monday 23 January 12 06:16 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you all for your help.
His family went to live in Andover, Massachusetts, and I have found where and when they died.  I'm pretty sure that the line died out there.  I cannot find James anywhere after his "stowaway".  Yes it is 1904 when the boat arrived in Boston,  it was a little bit hard to read, which makes the birth time 1886 spot on. I don't know what happened to him after that, and as there are quite a few James McGhie's, unless the parents names are mentioned, I'm not quite sure which way to go.
Thank you Lisa.
Shelly I hadn't thought of an obituary, I will look into this,  thank you

United States of America / James McGhie - stowaway
« on: Sunday 22 January 12 06:44 GMT (UK)  »
I  was wondering if there is any way to find out what would have happened to a stowaway from Manchester to Boston.  James McGhie b 1883/4 in Toronto, Ohio stowed away on SS Iberian arriving at Boston on August 25th 1901.  His parents James and Elizabeth eventually lived in Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts.  I can't seem to find what would have happened to James Jnr.

thank you

Thank you Dawn for the information, I will certainly look into it.  I was hoping there was only one John Thompson - master mariner, but deep down knew it was quite unlikely.
Thank you

I found a John Thompson in the 1861 English census being the Master of the Vanguard.  This maybe the man I am looking for.  It says he was born in 1813 in Sunderland Durham, not to sure what happens to him after that.

I don't know where John and Elizabeth died.  I have the marriage cert for Grace Bell and Henry Tomlin Thompson and it states that he was born in Coquimoto, Chili.  At the time of his marriage to Grace he is 35 and he is a drover.  They were married in St. George, Qld.  This also states that his father John T Thompson was a master mariner.  Henry died in Brisbane on 6/10/1919 and is buried at Nundah Cemetery.  I do not know if Henry had any siblings.   I will also try Find My Past, thanks Ruskie.
Lloyds is a good place to start as well, thank you billyblue
Thanks all

I am looking for a John Tamplin or Tomlin Thompson who was a master mariner married to Elizabeth Bigham.  They had a son Henry Tomlin Thompson b 1840 in Coquimbo, Chili and dying in australia in 1919. Could you tell me where I could find out about John and Elizabeth, I am assuming they are British.
