Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: 1881 Census help
« on: Yesterday at 12:29 »
The one in 1881 with the Campbells is Catherine Cawson, widow, who can be found in earlier censuses.

She is not the widowed Catherine Chandler who is in 1901 and is the wife of Alfred and mother of Jane, 2 yrs at 1861 2650/90/7.

For some reason, Jane’s father is recorded as Patrick on her marriage certificate. :-\

Cheers Heywood and to all who have added comments

Now the wife has gone out I can get stuck into this today.

My first thought on Friday was the 1881 had been rushed and wrote down wrong and the same for Catherine Cawson. Thanks for the correction on Catherine.

I now have a mug of coffee and a packet of paracetamol, will deconstruct all the comments.

Thank you all so much for your time and effort it is very much appreciated.

I was tracking James and his son Robert Callaghan and I have all that data from 1891 to the 1939 Register. With the Marriage of James & Jane in 1875. James died Q3 1901 his stated age was 52 (again) in Salford but is not buried in any council cemetery.

Now they have been found on the 1881 I just cannot get my head around why they were called the Campbell + also showing a widowed Catherine age 60 who is also on the 1901 as Catherine Chandler aged 70

James Callaghan married Jane Chandler 1875, Q3, Manchester, Vol 8d, Page 600.

I now regret telling a friend I have paid one months subs on findmypast just help me clear some research rust before the 1921 census gets out.

I have tried to search with variants on FindmyPast also familysearch but cannot locate these people in the 1881 census.

I have them with a name variant on the 1891 census, also have them on the 1901, 1911 and 1939 register, but pulling my hair out on the 1881, not that I have any.

What have I missed? the surname is Callaghan and this list is from the 1891 census, I have removed the children that were born after 1881. James & Jane were born in Liverpool, but the kids are from Salford/Manchester.

Who were his parents?  Mothers maiden name can be obtained using the freebmd info on

If he married - who did he name as his father on his marriage cert?

Hi CaroleW, Comberton, osprey
Thank you for the quick replies

I have a copy of the entry in the church register for when he got married and fathers named as William Evans a coal merchant.

The Humphreyson possible maiden name has Williams father as a Tailor, but we know about bending the truth, my William did it to get a job in Heaton Park.

It is 4 Walter Street, Broughton on the marriage register.

I have everything on him from 1871 onwards including grave photos, his childrens baptism certs, their marriages, death certificates for him and his wife.

It is just working out which William to chase back to 61 & 51.

I am a member of The Friends of Heaton Park Group and we are trying to piece together this lost family history. I can also say I was baptised in the same font as their children some 80 years later.

All help very much appreciated

Hi Folks

Can anybody help find William Evans born 1840 or 1842 on the 1851 & 1861 census please.
Q4 1840 Shrewsbury Volume 18 Page 175 or Q4 1842 Shrewsbury Volume 18 Page 165.

I have him from 1871 up to his death in 1899 living and working in Heaton Park, Prestwich, Manchester.

1871 - William Evans – Head – Aged 29 - Born 1842 – Male – From Blodwell, Shropshire.

Llanyblodwel is a village and civil parish in Shropshire, England; the spelling "Llanyblodwell" was commonly used in the past, and the village was sometimes simply referred to as "Blodwel". Salop is an old name for Shropshire, historically used as an abbreviated form for post or telegrams

I wonder if you wanted to find Sarah in 1871 to see if she was listed as married. There is a Sarah Leigh living in Bristol age 23 b. Bowden(sic) Cheshire. She is listed as unmarried working as a housemaid in the household of Thomas McDonnell a merchant born in Manchester. Address 16 Royal York Crescent.
