Cumberland Resources & Offers / Re: Helan or Hellon or Hilland
« on: Saturday 24 September 16 10:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi Mabel, I get more confused by the minute. The 1851 census and the only one which is there showing them all as a family, shows her age to be 13 and she is a Flax Spinner. In the next 10 years the whole family splits up and it looks as though John her brother aged 18 may well have died as well as her mother Nancy( who does not show up on the death records). Her husband appears to marry once again and possibly Eleanor. Eleanor and Sarah are remembered when HUgh her brother, aged 10 in 1851 marries but her brother's two children bearing those christian names  also die within a year of being born. ( names spelled as Hyland) Looks like there was a great many premature deaths at that time. In 1861 Hugh is living with a family called Devlin in Whitehaven and he marries one of the daughters. I think that he appears on the 61 census as Hillinge. What accents my ancestors must have had but I remember well my Geordie granpapents and Uncles had wonderful accents too which I found almost impossible to understand when they had been out drinking in the local  miners club. I think that I will have to send away for the marriage certificate to further this. Frazer may be the way forward but as far as I know Eliza only had one christian name although Ann could well be part of it because Nancy is the same as Ann.
Regards Ted

Hi Mabel,I never thought about the surname Monkhouse. How silly of me but I know that you are right about getting the certificate. I tried Fryer but could not find him at all. I suppose it could be spelled as Frier. I suppose it was the six letters that threw me and I did not think laterally as I should have done. I have been 38 years on this search and have probably given up on the Irish search as I could not find out whether they were from the north or the south. I think that they were from the north. You
Thank you.
Ted.

Hi Mabel, thanks for your suggestion..The 1851 census shows that Eliza was 13 years old in that year which does not quite fit but I would imagine that Cleator was where most of them finished up, including Hugh before they moved to the Durham coal mines. I will follow that up and see where it leads. One thing I forgot to add is that with the James Riley marriage,it was noticeable that there was always a lodger with them whose name was recorded as Hellon and Holland on differing census,s.

Cumberland Resources & Offers / Helan or Hellon or Hilland
« on: Thursday 22 September 16 19:27 BST (UK)  »
For years now I have been trying to find out my mother's family name which from about 1871 became Hilland. I traced the first Hilland family back to Whitehaven on the 1851 census where they were noted as "Helan" and they were all from Ireland. Now over the next twenty years the name in the census documents changes to Hellon and then is 71 to Hillan but I presume that with a thick Irish accent what the ennumerator heard, I dread to think. Now although I have found meaningful records for Michael the father, I can find little about the rest of them. I believe that two of the daughters married under the name "Hellon" as did Hugh the youngest son but I want to make sure about the two daughters Jane married I think in June period 1856 at Whitehaven and Eliza married in Dec period 1857. Jane I believe married James Riley and Eliza someone who is recorded as being James "Muncas". I think that is a spelling mistake as I can find no trace of that name anywhere. I do not know whether anyone ever pays a visit to the Whitehaven Registry Office and try and find out about these two individual women. Their father's name was Michael and I found that name on Hugh's marriage in 1861 as "Hellon", so if my logic is correct he should be on the two marriage certificates of Jane and Eliza but I do doubt the surname Muncas". Jane is recorded as having certificate number 10b689 and Eliza 10b 816. It appears they came over from Ireland circa 1845. Any help would be appreciated ergarding this family. It looks like their mother died circa 1855 as Michael marries again but I cannot finf her death anywhere but it could be that she was ercorded as being Ann rather than "Nancy" in the 1851 census. Michael appears to  marry Mary mcKonvil in 1856
Thank you.

Thank you for your help. One major problem that I have is that it is clear that the name that appears in the census documents was not what was spelled out by my ancestors and it is fairly obvious that they were illiterate .Although the surname finished up as "Hilland" and obviously sounded like that to some enumerator , throughout the years it appears as Hillon,Hellon,Hyland,Hillin and to be honest that is what I could hear when my "geordie" grandparents and their neighbours etc, used to say their name.Obviously the surname was something sounding like that but I never heard it said with an Irish accent .I take your point about the North of the island.
Regards and thanks,Ted.

Cumberland / Michael Helan ,Nancy and his children ( Whitehaven)
« on: Monday 03 March 14 11:41 GMT (UK)  »
I am wondering whether anybody can help me identify where in Ireland my ancestors came from and when they arrived in Whitehaven.Although I have now   extensively researched my ancestors once they arrived here in England, I cannot for the life of me begin to work out how I can go back to Ireland and make a meaningful and further search. The trouble is that i have so little information. The family consisting of Michael " Helan" aged40,Nancy his wife aged 45, Sarah 24,Elinor22,John18,Jane16,Eliza13 and Hugh 10(on the 1851 Census) do not appear on the 1841 census and all of them appear to be born in (Ireland) and so it appears that they came across from Ireland between 1841 and 1851.The census gives little information else and I have no documentary evidence to take me back to Ireland apart from the marriage certificate of Hugh when he married Margaret Devlin in 1861 at Whitehaven. I think Eliza married locally but have no idea what happened to the rest of them.Nancy appears to die about 1855 and Michael marries again to a lady called Mary McConvil.I just have no idea how to  go back as I do not know where to start in Ireland.I would presume that they came from the north but that's it. Anybody out there can help? The family eventually finished up with the surname of Hilland which was my mother's surname before marriage.
Thank you.
Ted.

Hi "Snuggs",just to let you know that whilst trying to get to the bottom of this mystery about what the name was in Ireland, I came across two child deaths in the family circa 1865 at Usworth,County Durham. They were recorded at a Catholic Church in that area and as you stated in your message,
their  surnames were spelled "Hyland" and their Christian names were in Latin. You are correct about how the names sounded to the individuals who could read and write but it appears to me,that their father Hugh Hilland (no 1) and there were three in total could read and write .It further appears that he was the first one to use the name "Hilland" I am still confused. I am told that Hilland was not an Irish name although it is clear that many used it in Ireland. Thanks for your input.
Regards Ted.
