In the next couple of weeks i will hopefully have the death certificate for Edith McMahon and also his suicide letter.

I will let you both know when i get them...im going to look up marlins in the Richmond area (white pages).
It makes sense what you said about the possibility of his mother not registering his birth...maybe he never knew his father either and Mr McMahon was like his dad?!

Because if all this is close to the truth it makes sense why he is a marlin when his mother remarried.
My mothers mother remarried after "john marlin" twice and neither adopted my mother so she remained a  marlin.

Well i will get in touch soon! please try and stay with me on this..you have both helped alot and its just comforting to know i have someone who is more good at this then me helping me along the way. :-*

I just called the only "marlin" in the white pages Richmond...she was old and not much help.
She said that her husband is dead and all his family that were marlins!
I told her some names and she said that they were 5 in his family and she didnt know any ediths.
She sounded a little impatient so i ended the call asking one last time if there were any of her husbands brothers alive sisters etc... not that i know of she said...not in richmond anyway.

That's a good idea checking for john McMahon ! But i would love to know where you guys are searching for NZ births ? what site? as i went on NZ bdm and it didn't work for me?! (date range problem).

And where is Richmond? also thinking that what if he was born in NZ but his birth was registered here? is that possible?

Did you spell marlin merlin or was her surname shown as merlin? edith merlin or marlin ? before she became a mcmahon?
sorry im still in sleep mode..was she originally a marlin and married a mcmahon or vise versa?
and she must have been only 17 when she had him if she is the mother?!

Hi LU,
Thanks for the info i will order that.
Do you think Edith McMahon was a marlin (his mum or something?)
Because Trish found an Edith marlin 1899 and also Edith McMahon 1977.
What info will the file have? will it show anything to do with my grandad if he was related to her?
woops!! im so stupid lol..i noticed she was born in 1899 and died 1977 which made her...how old? im bad at math.

here i go again...i read the reply you wrote about checking the births registry for his birth..i dont know why i didnt see it before? ::)
Anyway thank you and its strange that he states he was born there but no record of it?? how could that happen? unless he changed his name for some odd reason??

Hi Lu and Trish! (my little detectives!!) lol.
I just woke up its 6 am still trying to process the info on the McMahon marriage...
I was thinking Edith could have been his mum or something because she was married in 1927?? or around that time so he would have been only10 yrs old or so..?!
I think it gets a little deeper...maybe he was born in NZ but maybe his mum left his dad or something and came here and remarried...i think im still asleep..zzzz...i need to go back and read what you guys wrote dates names and all.

One strange thing was...my mum mentioned that when she was little they (her and her dad and mum ) lived with a lady here in Sydney she called nana.
she was only 2 yrs old and memory comes only from info her very old aunt told us.
this lady was like a mother to him but not his mother.

sadly no names or anything were remembered, which makes it all harder.
It just seems like he had lost all connections with the NZ part of his life or family since he never mentioned them much in any documents or personal life...or maybe he was addopted?

ill come back after breakfast ???

I know he was a ladies man from stories my mum was told and something in his medical record also suggested it in his service record. ;)

Hi,
I am trying to find out about my grandfathers family in New Zealand.
His name was "John Francis Marlin" D.O.B 31/Oct/1917 or 1919
Born in Timaru New Zealand...he came to Australia but we dont know when and we dont know if he ever returned to NZ.
He served in world war two Australian army in 1940 died in Sydney in 1968 at the age of 49.
We never met him and my mother last saw him when she was 3 yrs  old.
He must have had family in NZ but i dont know where to find them and how...'MARLIN".
I would like to apply for a birth certificate but dont know how to pay from here or if i would need to provide id or not.
Please help me with any information or advice possible.

I have his world war two service records and two pictures...
I know he was married to Mary ford in 1940 (thanks  for looking anyway).
I will look at the website and hopefully find more..
Strange thing is he listed three woman on his service records as next of kins while in the war,all on separate service records.
Now i mainly need to know if he had any family in NZ.
You see he committed suicide that's how he died..i will have his suicide letter soon i hope from the coroners court but he is a mystery to us...why he killed himself and why he left NZ.
