Cambridgeshire / Re: REDMAN Family poss Stapleford

Hi there David,
Yes Helen married in 1828 in Melbourn to Alfred Coningsby and Margaret appears visting them on the 1861 census, thats how I knew where she was born.

I had a look at the CFHS site and that could be the parents of Helen but the Stapleford Marriage record for 1795 has Richard Redman and Margaret Humphrey and lists Margaret as being 'of Granchester'  I can understand the ease distancewise of Granchester to Stapleford (I grew up nearby) but I'm still puzzling over the inclusion of the Woodard in Helen's name if her mothers maiden name was Humphrey...
It is possible that Helen was missed or maybe baptised elsewhere, though if it is the right family they didn't seem to move to far out of the county at all : Grancester to Stapleford, Stapleford to Chesterton, Chesterton to Melbourn.

Thanks for your help.

Thank you all so much, for pointing me in the right direction, I have managed to track the family back through the census to 1841 and that was how I'd calculated Johns birth year, I'm still a little confused over the place names, never having been to Stoke.. are Fenton, Longton, Shelton, Blythe bridge all villages or are they just areas within a town?  I've tried looking at old maps but it's all a bit confusing.
thanx

Hi there,
Well I tried the fmily search and found JOHN HAWLEY - International Genealogical Index / BI
Gender: Male Christening: 27 JAN 1792 Rugeley, Stafford, England
But I'm not sure how I can find out if this is the John Hawley that I have from my family tree as being born in 1792 in Longton..

John Hawley is the father of the main person I am interested in - Felix Hulme Hawley, b abt 1820, m 1844, d 1891.  It would seem most of Felix's life events occured in Longton / Fenton as did the birth of all his children.

Thanx all for your suggestions, please keep them coming!

Canada / Re: Peach Farms in Canada
« on: Thursday 28 May 09 08:56 BST (UK)  »
CConingsby seems to indicate they are two separate memories that are only linked by a recollection of peaches. The train trip was Ted's experience as a young man in the British Navy during WWII while Ted's uncle emigrated when Ted was a child.

Yes two separate memories both jolted by the name of Teds Uncle.  Both Ted and his sister remember their uncle being discussed as having a peach farm in Canada and are fairly sure their local vicar maintained contact with him via post.  It would seem that Ted may have been getting confused between Henry and another uncle who left for the USA when Ted was about 10 according to his elder sister, so it is possable that Henry was in Canda for the 1911 cesus and could be either of the ones found by Lydart in the BC records.  Given that Nan is generally more reliable about these things I'd be inclined to follow her view.

Henry is listed as 15 in the 1901 census in the UK and is an aggricultural labourer, according to fenland historians many of the young men found it hard to find work on the farms, there were simply too many workers and not enough work (sound familiar?)  so many upped sticks and left.  Nan seemed to think there were quite a few from Oakington who left, I don't think she was born when Henry left but she is 5 years older than Ted so her memory of her parents discussing Henry and his friends may be more reliable.

Also both of Oakington.

Wow, I love this forum! Ted will be so pleased that I can tell him a bit more about where he might have been -  they weren't told where they were going as they were going to board the secret navy subs that were supposed to rival the u-boats.

The only facts I have for Henry William Smith is that he was born in Oakington, Cambridgeshire, UK on 07 September 1885, He was still in the UK in the 1901 census, so must have left sometime after then.

Canada / Peach Farms in Canada
« on: Wednesday 27 May 09 12:08 BST (UK)  »
One of my relatives Ted (in his 80s) remembers traveling through Canada during WW2 and being on a train which stopped and young men came to the train from a peach farm to give them peaches. His memory is a bit 'fuzzy' but he thinks it was 'on the plains' somewhere past Toronto!  He then also remembered that an Uncle had emigrated to Canada from the UK when Ted was a child and that the uncle Henry William Smith from Oakington Cambs was supposed to have owned a peach farm.
I wonder how comman peach farms were in the inter war years in Canada and how difficult it would be to find out where Henry went?
Any advice of information would be greatly received.
Thanx

Cambridgeshire / REDMAN Family poss Stapleford
« on: Wednesday 27 May 09 11:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi there, just to see if anybody has any ideas of a family named Redman in the Stapleford area of Cambridgeshire abt 1796ish, as I am trying to trace the parents of a Helen Maria Woodard Redman born abt this time.  I believe her mothers name was Margaret and Margaret was born in Calcutta but Helen was born in Stapleford.  I have tried the parish records CD but although there are Redmans there none of the first names match.
Thanx

Could anybody out there offer some assistance?  I've been trying to trace some ancestors from Stoke on Trent but have reached a gap between the 1841 census and the parish records CD which I ordered but it only goes up to 1812... don't really know what to do, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanx
