Hi I was interested in your post about your great great uncle and the Bray Head. I have done some research into the sinking of the ship and have a couple of documents relating to it including the ship's crew list, which lists Charles McFarlane, if you were interested. Would it be possible to get a copy of his photo and the letter ?

Hi

My fault for being economical with his name. His full hame is Moses Alexander Reid and under that name he is commemorated on the CWGC. He was always know to my grandmother as Alex Reid and the name stuck. Sorry !

Hi Yes I am sure of the details > alex Reid was in the Merchant Navy but also judging from his uniform appears to have been in the RNR. Along with the other casualties of the Bray Head he is commemorated on the Merchant Navy memorial on Tower Hill. There is also a medal index card which mentions his RNR service in TNA. It would be intersting to know eher you have looked for his Naval service. Thanks.

Thanks for this particularly the stuff from Islandmagee as a secondary part of the reseaerch is to find out a bit more about the other  members of the crew who died. The last crew list of the Bray Head which is in the National Archives shows that a good number came from the Carrickfergus/Islandmagee'Whitehed  area. The eye witness account came from a crew member called J Watson who came from Killyleagh.

Thanks also for the Mercantile Marine forum although I am aware of this and have contributed to it.

 Regards

I am researching a relative Alexander Reid who was killed when the ship on which he was serving the SS Bray Head was sunk by a German submarine in March 1917. The Bray Head formerly the Indralema, was part of the Head Line or Ulster Steamship Company. The crew were put into open boats and the ship was sunk by gunfire - over 20 of the crew were killed including the master.

I have been told there is an eye witness account and a sketch of the sinking and I am hoping that someone might know something about these.
