Completed Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Re: 1851 census - CLARKE family, Hinckley

Hi Mike

Your original post mentioned a James 37, which I took to be the nephew that turned out to be Samuel on the census image.

Rest assured, only trying to be helpful.

John

Hi Mark and Mike

Don’t talk to me about Clarke’s and Leicestershire! Mark, mine originate from Mountsorrel – so far.

Anyway, read your thread for obvious reasons and will fill in the 1851 census details where there seems to be a slight discrepancy at the end.

Ref: HO107/2082/278 Page 18
Address: Castle Street, Hinckley. (no. 56 on the schedule)

All surnames Clarke unless stated.

George – 47 – Head – Mar – Clock Maker – Leicester, Hinckley
Sophia – 46 – Wife – Mar – Stocking Maker Cotton – Leicester, Barwell
George – 18 – Son – Unm – Stocking Maker Cotton – Leicester, Hinckley
Elizabeth – 15 – Daur – Unm – Stocking Maker Cotton – Leicester, Hinckley
Hugh – 11 – Son – Winder – Leicester, Hinckley
Samuel – 9 – Son – Winder – Leicester, Hinckley
Sophia – 3 – Daur – Scholar – Leicester, Hinckley
Ezekial – 1 - Son – Leicester, Hinckley
Jane Wright – 79 – Mother in Law – Widow – Pauper – Leicester, Kirby
Samuel – 37 – Nephew – Mar – Stocking Maker (Cotton) – Leicester, Hinckley

Keep up the hunt – good luck.

Hi Wayne

Late to the party and bringing bad news I’m afraid.

I’ve checked the 1841 for the Ludford and surrounding area and can see no trace of your Harris family.

Just to mention that you are correct about Ludford being separated from Ludlow by the River Teme and Ludford Bridge (rebuilt in the 15th Century). For a picture of Ludford Bridge try the following ref:

Good luck with your hunt.

Hi Kim

Can’t help much I’m afraid, only to tell you that the marriage of James and Maria was recorded in the June Quarter of 1854 in the District of Stourbridge. Ref: Volume 6c, Page 209

Hope it helps a bit.

Hi Dave

Sorry to disappoint you , but I haven't got access to 1841.

Only wish I could help you further. I'm sure some kind soul will help you out.

Good luck

Hi again

Got so fixed on Thomas that I forgot the family.

1851 Wales
Ref: HO107/1991/160 Page 2
Address: Caydway, Bauseley. (think it might be Coedway now – between Alberbury and Crew Green)

All surnames Bel?h (a ‘c’, who knows – looks more like an ‘s’ to me)

Richard – Head – M – 3? – Farm Labourer – Salop,
Margaret – Wife – M – 37 – Montgomery, Bau?ley
John – Son – 13
Mary – Daur – 7
Jane – Daur – 3
Sarah – Daur – 5 – Scholar
William – Son – 10m

The second figure for Richard may be 4. All the children share the same birth place as Margaret – guess it’s Bauseley but it’s squeezed in on the form. I confirm the ages, don’t know why they are out of order?

Ah – I can go to bed now.

All the best
John

Thanks Joe - Cheers

Hi Joe (& Dave)

This had me going as well!

Unfortunately if you check the Richard & Maria family in 1861 then Thomas is still living with them. The Thomas that Dave is looking for, is a servant on Hurst Farm in Westbury at the time of the 1861 census (assuming I’ve got the one he’s referring too!).

Anyway, this is my best calculated guess (although his age is dodgy).

1851 Wales (don't you love places on the border)
Ref: HO107/1991/166 Page 15
Address: Crew Green, Township of Bauseley (a couple of miles north west of Alberbury – his birth place quoted in 1861)

Thomas Jones – Head – M – 31 – Maltster 1 man 1 boy – Montgomery, Guildsfield
Martha Jones – Wife – M – 29 – Montgomery, Lland?nio
La??sa Jones – Daur – 6 – Montgomery, Alberbury
Infant – Daur – 1month – Montgomery, Alberbury
Elizabeth Jones – Visitor – U – 28 – Montgomery, Guildsfield
Thomas Bel?h – Servt – U – 1? – Montgomery, Alberbury
Thomas Pryce – Servant – Widower – 61 – Malt Maker – Montgomery, Guildsfield

? in place of unreadable letters. I can’t honestly make the missing letter a ‘c’ in his surname. The second figure on his age may be 4, hence the age being a bit dodgy.

Anyway, it’s the best I can come up with. Good luck with the hunt.

John

Hi Jean

Bit late reading this one, but I have to say your descriptions of his places of birth intrigued me into having an investigation.

Having looked at the images, may I suggest?
1861 England census – Forton
1871 England census – Preen (not Brecon, I did wonder about Bicton (close to Forton and M Bridge), but this one may have to remain a mystery – also see comments about 1851 below.
1881 England census – Shropshire
1891 England census – Shropshire
1901 England census – Montford Bridge

Forton (Heath) and Montford Bridge lie essentially next door to each other, just north west of Shrewsbury. You didn’t mention 1891 in your list; let me know if you want the details from it.

As regards 1851, I’m afraid that’s a bit more difficult. The best one I can see is a John Lloyd that again is listed as being born Preen, like the 1871. The only Preen I know in Shropshire is Church Preen, but that is about 10 miles south east of Shrewsbury. Anyway the location of Mock Hall, Fitz is very close to Forton Heath, and Montford Bridge is just down the road. See what you think.

Ref: HO107/1991/234 Page 17
Mock Hall, Fitz (between Forton Heath and Grafton)

John Pugh – Head – U – 66 – Farmer of 120 acres employing 3 men and 1 boy – Shropshire, Pontesbury
Mary Pugh – Sister – U – 60 – Housekeeper – Shropshire, Pontesbury
Mary Pebody – Visitor – U – 63 – Annuitant – Staffordshire, Gonsall
John Lloyd – Servant – U – 23 – Waggoner – Shropshire, Preen
John Gough – Servant – U – 17 – Ag Lab – Shropshire, Fitz
James Lloyd – Servant – 12 – Waggoners Boy – Shropshire, Montford

Note:
Mary Pebody has an ‘x’ in the column for ‘Whether Blind, or Deaf-and-Dumb column’. No other marks on the page, so it could actually relate to what it’s supposed to!

I’d be interested in what you think and I’ll try and have a look for more stuff over the next few days.

Regards
John

Shropshire Lookup Requests / Re: 1891 look up please WILLIAM and ANN HUGHES
« on: Saturday 22 October 05 02:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi Beryla

Hmm, good one this.

Here’s what I found for 1891 – surname transcribed as ‘Robert’ (don’t you just love Ancestry)

Ref: RG12/2134/95 Page 3
Address: B??rey Cottage, Edgmond, Newport

William – Servant – M – 4? – Farm Laborer – Salop, Weston???
Ann – Wife – M – 36 – Salop, Burwarton
Mary A – Daur – 14 – Salop, Bitterley
Alice – Daur – 8 – Salop, Albrighton
George – Son – 6 – Salop, Preston
Arthur – Son – 3 – Salop, Edgmond

A couple of things:
All surnames Hughes and all spellings as per census entry (where able to identify letters). For William they have put Servant instead of Head. The second figure for his age could be 0. The birth place for William as been written over in thick black and resembles Weston and then possibly three letters I can’t identify. As for the address, modern maps show a Buttery Farm in the area just south west of Adeney. Someone with local knowledge can probably sort that problem out.

By the way, I have forwarded a surname correction to Ancestry.

For 1901 we have:

Ref: RG13/2567/18 Page 23
Address: Howle, Chetwynd, Newport

William – Head – M – 50 – Teamster on Farm – Salop, Wistontoe
Ann – Wife – M – 46 – Salop, Burwerton
George – Son – S – 15 – Ag. Horse – Salop, Preston
Charles Henry – Son – 8 – Salop, Kinnersley

A couple of things:
All surnames Hughes and all spellings as per census entry (where able to identify letters). I would guess William’s birth place is supposed to be Wistanstow.

I hope this is the right family – it’s been a challenge! Hopefully someone with local knowledge can fill in the gaps for you.

Good hunting
John
