Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Bilsington parish records. Completely stuck!!
« on: Monday 14 October 13 14:52 BST (UK)  »
Yes, but this William seems to have been married to Sarah Eliza and had 9 children by her before marrying Frances.  Some of the children of William and Frances are either Sarah's or seem to be Frances's from when Sarah was still alive.  I am looking to see if Sarah died in 1860 and if Frances had been married before as well.

All a bit muddled as I am just beginning to sort it out.  We are descended from William Ephraim Horton, the son of William and Sarah Eliza.

I am sure it is the same William married to Sarah and Frances as the children of Sarah are then living with William and Frances in the later census!  I have lots of print outs of baptisms and marriages for Bilsington to go through over the next day or two.

I know this is years later but I am looking at this family and would be happy to swap information if you are interested.  I believe Frances was the second wife of William Horton and some of the children were from an ealier marriage (or illegitmate) of Frances.

Radnorshire Lookup Requests / Ashford/Owen marriage Llandrindod, Radnorshire
« on: Thursday 22 March 12 14:48 GMT (UK)  »
I have found a marriage on ancestry of Joseph Ashford and Elizabeth Owen in Llandrindod, Radnorshire on 30 Dec 1814 and the groom is from Tachbrook, Warwickshire and the marriage was by licence.  This all fits except for the date - my Joseph and Elizabeth were born in 1804 and 1806.  In case there is a transcription error I wondered if anyone could check the original registers or Bishops Transcripts if they have a copy/access to them.

This has been puzzling me for a few years and I would love to solve it.  The first child of the couple was born in Tachbrook in 1832 so I would imagine the marriage should be between 1825 and 1832.

Thanks for all the help - much of which will be useful for other research.  I have now found that Edwin jnr is the son of Edwin snr. who was transported to Australia.

I have logged on via my library card to the Times digital archive - the British Library link looks very interesting but I do not have free access and my library does not offer it.  Anyway, the Times had a report of the case of 1871 and gave an age for Edwin Dresch of 21 which will help me to pinpoint him.  I do not yet know the prison he went to but I am a lot further forward.

Thank you.

Thank you for all the replies - I am going to read and digest and then get back with a more informed reply!

I did suspect I would have to chase at the London record offices - I have had a look at the leaflets but hadn't yet worked out the exact next step.  Anyway I am going to look at all the very helpful information from you all and then get back to this post.

Thank you for your reply.  Yes I did know the offence - just avoided putting it on the query!  I have checked the 1871 and 1881 census entries and cannot find Edwin Dresch anywhere in the U.K.  I have tried both ancestry and my genealogist sites.  The only one is 2 years old - BUT I know that the name is often mistranscribed due to poor handwriting on the original, and some prisons did not put full names down.

The other Edwin, convicted of forgery in 1865 was transported and I have followed him up so I know this 1871 case is a different one.  Four others were convicted of the same offence in 1871 as the latter Edwin.  I hoped if I could find the court records or prison records I might be able to get some more info. on him and see if he linked in to the relatives tree which I am researching for him.  But I do not know how to find out how to see the court records or the name of the prison he was sent to, makes me realise how wonderful it is to have the Old Bailey records freely available on line.

Unfortunately the 1871 record I have seen already on ancestry details the offence but does not give the age or any other information about the person.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Court records - COMPLETED

I have found a record for Edwin Dresch for a trial on 20 March 1871 - Middlesex adjourned general session held at Clerkenwell (ancestry data).  I have looked at the National Archives but cannot see where or how to access the trial record or find more details of the offence or where the sentence was to be served. (12 months)

I am sorry if I should have been able to work this out but am stuck.  Another Edwin was tried in 1865 and I have that from the Old Bailey transcripts.

I have the entry for Thomas Marsh 1793 on the national archives non-conformist registers site.   The info from the Victoria County history link was really useful - so thank you to both researchers and I will now close this look up request.
