Lancashire / Dun/Dunn Street, Greengate, Salford
« on: Thursday 28 October 10 12:08 BST (UK)  »
I've just received a certificate for a death registered 1895 in the subdistrict of Greengate in Salford.  It contains the address 6 Dun Street, Salford.  In the list of streets for the 1871 census I found Dunn Street.  It's not on my A-Z street map and I googled it but didn't find anything.  Does anyone know where it was?

Hi, there is a record on the IGI (familysearch.org) for the baptism of William Kitchen on 18th May 1828 at Newcastle OTyne, Northumberland.  Parents William and Margaret Kitchen.

Hi Carole, he was my grandfather but my grandma didn't marry him so I just have a little info from elderly relatives.   There are two marriages for Herbert Harrison father of the Kenneth W Harrison born 1898 Urmston.  One marriage Apr 1896 and another Oct 1897. Both married Ada Gertrude Horrocks, the name of the mother on the birth certificate. Could be two different couples?

Then two marriages Kenneth W Harrison 1929 Manchester S and the other Kennedy W Harrison 1933 Manchester S.  Both married to Isabel Eshelby. Could Kennedy be a spelling mistake or, again, two different couples?

Is there any reason why a marriage would be registered twice?  I know from watching Heir Hunters that a birth could be registered a second time years later to add a father's name.     I can't find a death for Kenneth.

Hi all,  I'm searching for more information about Kenneth William Harrison (or may be William Kenneth Harrison).  He was probably born late 1890's - 1900.  Around 1925 he was living on Chapel Street, Salford or in that area, near St Stephens Street.  He played the piano and worked in clubs.  Salford History Library looked at the electoral rolls for 1925/26 for Chapel Street and found Catherine and Henry Harrison at no. 295.

I have a birth certificate for a Kenneth W Harrison born 1898 Urmston, not far from Salford.  Parents Herbert and Ada.  Herbert was a cotton manufacturer. Harrison is a common name and there are quite a few Herberts and Williams.  I need to somehow find a link to the Kenneth William in the Chapel Street area in 1925.  I was hoping to find a marriage after this date to confirm occupation and name of father, or a death.

Hi everyone,  Thanks for all that info.  Turns out Jessie is Mary's daughter and their surname was Connor - confirmed by birth and marriage certificates with addresses that were confirmed by census records.

Mary Connor married John Rafter in 1892.  He died 1897 and she married Henry Garnett 1898, using the former name Barrow.  Mary's father was John Connor, sailor.

James Barrow and Ellen's marriage certificate gives her surname as Connelly, both of 1 Benbow Street, Salford.  James' father was James Barrow, hatter and Ellen's father James Connelly, basket maker.  So Ellen gave Mary the father's name.  Maybe he was at sea and didn't return.   But then that birth registered Glasgow Central does look like them  ::)

Regards, Lyn

Hi again, thanks for the latest info and all your hard work, I really appreciate it.

I've just had contact with another researcher descended from Alexander Barrow who has only just started researching this line.  He can't tell me anything about Jessie but I can now confirm that Ellen was definitely formerly Conley.  Alexander Barrow married Mary Jane Peers and they had Ada born Salford 1910.  Hopefully I will be able to glean some info if he has Alexander's birth certificate.   I will make contact tomorrow.

Despite some discrepancies in ages I'm sure it's the same family in all 3 censuses.  The 1851 looks promising as the details match the IGI christening  for James Barrow in Exeter 1837 and they were probably there in 1841.

I think the 1880 marriage is looking more likely.

If a woman has been widowed twice and marrying for the third time, would the marriage certificate contain both her previous married names?   I'm thinking know about Mary (Harris, Barrow, Rafter, Garnett......)

Thanks, Lyn  :)

Hi Pels and Gadget,

Thanks for those entries.  The James Barrow Salford birthplace must be incorrect then.   So many different possible name combinations for Jessie!

I think I will have to send for some certificates, including the Jessie Harris birth registration in 1889 Salford,  if only to rule out the possibilities.  If the 1880 James Barrow and Ellen Conelly marriage is the right one it may give some clues as to other surnames.

Regards,  Lyn    :)

Thanks Pels and Gadget.   I had considered the possibility that Jessie was Mary's child, which would explain her being called Jessie Garnett, daughter, in 1901.  Didn't know how to go about research over the border.  I'm amazed at your detective skills!   I only just found out that Jessie, Janie, Jinny and Jenny were pet names for Janet (and also for Jean in Scotland).

Just quizzed an elderly relative who tells me he knew Mary was born in Scotland but she didn't have a scottish accent.  Also, maybe I should have added that on Mary and Henry Garnett's marriage certificate, Mary is recorded as Mary Rafter, widow (formerly Barrow).  I can't find a Jessie Rafter either.  This made me wonder if Mary claimed to be a widow in order to legitimise her daughter.

If the 1871 census is the right one are we assuming then that Mary was Ellen's illegitimate daughter?  In 1891 Salford James and Ellen have nine children listed,  three of them born in Salford before that marriage in 1880.

In 1881 James Barrows birthplace is given as Exeter, Devon and 1891 it's Salford.

Lyn  :)
