He was living in Chesterfield when he passed away, would it be best to check there for an obit?  I'm from Canada, so I have no clue where these places really are except when looking at a map.  It's my understanding that all the places he lived are an easy distance from each other (Rotherham, Sheffield, Chesterfield and Hasland).

The family seems to be originally from Chesterfield, spent a few generations in Rotherham/Sheffield, then went back to Chesterfield. It was from there that James' son Frank and his large family came to Canada in 1913.  Frank's son Roland went down with his ship during WW2, poor soul.

Are these local newspapers available on microfilm? Obituaries in those days certainly hold massive amounts of information as to how our ancestors lived and what they did.

I was sent an obituary for James' brother-in-law, James Bellamy, who was part of the Rotherham Volunteer Rifles.  It sure does fit the descriptions everyone has provided me.  Now how would I go about finding any records from there?

This search is getting quite interesting, as James Bellamy's obituary was a long one, in the Rotherham Advertiser.  I'm wondering if that's how James Stevenson met his sister Mary Anne.  Volunteer soldiers hanging out?  ;D

Well, I checked the city directory for 1840 and it does indeed list him as being a butcher.  This is pretty surprising, to my knowledge most of his life he was a Sheriff in Rotherham.  I guess we all have to start out somewhere, and life leads us down different paths.

Sadly for me, it turns out he wasn't the Sheriff of Nottingham after all  ;D

Thanks for all your help!  :D

Is that all one household? I'm wondering if the 4 year old James might be him, the age fits.  I know he had a few sisters, but I don't have their names. I also don't think William was a butcher, but he very well could have been in his early years.  Maybe this is them after all...
