World War One / Re: Uniform identification please
« on: Monday 14 August 17 16:33 BST (UK)  »
The uniform is for a hot weather climate. Several battalions of the Manchesters were in India at the outbreak of WW1. They ended up joining the Egyption garrison in Palestine. It looks like an early WW1 jacket with pockets on the outside.

Kent / Re: Admiralty Harbour Dover
« on: Sunday 06 September 15 08:08 BST (UK)  »
Admiralty Harbour is the main harbour for Dover. It is still in use by ferries and other ships.

Finnis Hill was behind Snargate St. but is long gone. The slum buildings were demolished in 1937 and the remaining little community disappeared when the area was redeveloped for a highway scheme.

You could try contacting the Dover Society for further info http://www.doversociety.org.uk/ .

His death certificate can be found here:

It appears after he left the lighthouse he moved to Vancouver and became a laundyman.

I agree, it is a Seaforths uniform. You can see the stags head on the cap badge as well as the broach by his neck.

There's often a lot of fact in ramblings!!

There are a lot of Nicolsons from Skye and many are related. I have found out my Nicolsons were originally from Sutherland.

I have quite a few MacDonald ancestors from Heisker.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: DNA Testing - Why Not
« on: Tuesday 06 December 11 23:41 GMT (UK)  »
I have tested with FTDNA and have found relatives through the databases. I think of it as a tool, much like microfiche  files or online records. By itself it may not help some people but combined with other documentation it has proven valuable.

It can be used to prove or disprove family lore. DNA doesn't lie. In my case I found a distant cousin who was able to provide me with info on family members I never knew or would have known. Often the eldest gets the family bible and decendents of siblings may not know it existed.

It also helps knowing where to look. All the records I can find on my gg-grandfather say that he was born in Scotland. Where in Scotland??? Through DNA testing I was able to match people that had a paper trail to a particular region. That narrows my search.

There's nothing hocus pocus about it and it's a different test than what police forces use so there is really nothing to be afraid of. I don't know about the rest of you but in my quest to find my ancestors I'll use every tool available.

World War Two / Re: special communications unit section v111

The info from The Secret Wireless War was all I had seen on Harry.

As to the MBE have you tried the archives at Kew or the Imperial War Museum?

Maybe contact Geoff Pidgeon as he may have further research info.

Harry was a chief petty officer at the Flowerdown wireless station when he was recruited. Along with 5 other CPOs their status changed when they joined Gambier-Parry's mob. Due to the nature of their work for MI6 Section VIII they were considered not part of the regular armed forces and their pay books were mark NPAF (not paid army funds). This was all secret, hush hush.

Harry spent time as OC Weald and headed up SCU9. He retired as a major. Harry also headed a team of agents that were dropped behind enemy lines to report on German activities. This could explain why he was in Norway.

As part of their cover many of these people worked for the "Foreign Office".

If you're interested in the work he did there is an excellent book by Geoffrey Pidgeon called "The Secret Wireless War". Harry is mentioned on 11 pages and there is a photo of him.
