Ireland / Probate Index Record - Further Records
« on: Monday 25 October 21 08:50 BST (UK)  »
I've just found someone who I think is related to my family in a set of Irish probate indexes on Ancestry (Samuel Cowin in 1845, probate was at Clonora, the diocese was Cashel - I descend from another Cowin who came from Clonora).  I'm not hugely familiar with Irish genealogy resources, I know that many records were lost in the fire at the main record office so am not hugely hopeful that anything has survived beyond this index entry.  But it had survived, where would I need to look?  Would it be the diocese archives, the county archives or the national archives for this location / time period?

Thanks so much for any guidance from anyone more knowledgeable about Irish records!

Armed Forces / Royal Artillery Service Record 1800ís
« on: Saturday 29 May 21 09:09 BST (UK)  »
Iím trying to find the service record (or any record) of a Hugh Blair who was in the Royal Artillery and who died during a hurricane in Barbados in 1831 (source here - https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=jjwSAAAAYAAJ&pg=RA11-PA6&lpg=RA11-PA6&dq=hugh+blair+barbados+hurricane&source=bl&ots=KSnSvBLjg6&sig=ACfU3U2ns_1Rx3m3uUKtLCCIfO7_jO3p9A&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiImo_HtO7wAhUKA2MBHUW_BicQ6AEwD3oECAgQAg#v=onepage&q=hugh%20blair%20barbados%20hurricane&f=false)

Someone on Ancestry has linked this man to a Hugh Blair who was thought to have married my ancestors sister, and it would explain a potential marriage of her niece in Barbados alsoÖ Iím pretty intrigued but canít find the service record on FindMyPast, but Iíve struggled to find a few on there especially for mid 1800ís

Any ideas where I could look to find the service record of more information?

The Common Room / Records of French Citizens in UK in 1800ís

Iím researching a Frenchman who I think emigrated to England at some point between 1841 and 1851. He settled in Hertfordshire, married here and remained here for the rest of his life.

Censuses give his birthplace as Paris (on the only census that doesnít just say France) and a rough birthdate of around 1828. I do have his Fathers name from a marriage certificate.

Before I start trying to delve into French records, I was wondering what records (if any) there might be in England about him? Can anyone recommend any sources for this time period that he might appear in? He died in 1911.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Help Deciphering Regiment of Foot

I discounted Twenty initially as the 'w' doesn't match up with that below in Singlewoman, but as you've both said it I might need to reconsider.  Thank you for looking and taking the time to reply!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help Deciphering Regiment of Foot
« on: Thursday 05 March 20 20:45 GMT (UK)  »
Evening all - I really need help from a fresh pair of eyes!  My ancestor was mentioned in a settlement examination as being in a regiment of foot and posted overseas, it's the something fifth.  I really want to try and figure out which regiment to try and track down any records regarding him, but I just can't figure out that exact regiment.

I've included a bit before and after it of the text, any help would be really appreciated.
