Family History Beginners Board / Re: Richard (Dicky) White

A lot of Richard Whites in that search....do you have any other details that would narrow the options...occupation? Address? Age? An example of said “eccentricities “?
Richard White approx. 65 & Henry Clayton approx. 42, had travelled to the UK with various family members on board the brig 'Adelaide' They were business partners from what I can determine and were exporting bales of wool. More importantly they had travelled to the UK for the wedding of (the ship's master) George Dryden and Richard's grand daughter Sarah Jane White (daughter of John White).
Richard was a half American Negro who classed himself as a 'gentleman'. He was a wealthy land owner and had built the Launceston Hotel in Tasmania in 1822 (the first hotel) He was a keen gambler and a sharp dresser and would often be seen in Wellington Boots, white buckskin breeches, frock coat, top hat, wearing eyeglasses and carrying a walking stick. Eccentric in his ways and perhaps a little comical as well as an enthusiastic fiddle player. Also, his eccentricities "consisted in an assumed liberty of conversation to great and small"
Hope this helps. Thanks in advance

Henry was the son of Sarah Clayton (nee Sunderland) who was Richard White's long term consort. Richard was approx. 65 years old and Henry early 40's.

Thanks

Hi Guys

Does anyone have access to London newspapers who can look for any reference to Richard White or Henry Clayton during the period Mar 1840 to Nov 1842.
It seems Tricky Dicky was put away in a private madhouse due his eccentricities.

Thanks in advance
Jon

Robinredbreast

I understand there were several different England families in the region around this time. Unfortunately this Robert doesn't seem to be one of mine. I do have a Robert England born circa 1759 and Baptized Apr 30 1759 Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset, England. Parents were Robert England and Joan Gillard married 15/01/1759 Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset, England. That is all the information I have on this very distant arm. Is the same family???
I would be interested in looking at any information that you may have in respect to this line.

South Africa / Re: Gideon William Pott

Hi Anita
Thanks for your contact. Never got any info on this. As of 1953 when his brother Alexander John Pott died, Gideon William Pott was supposedly still in South Africa: -
Townsville Daily Bulletin Friday 16 October 1953
Mr. Alexander John Pott, who was born at Bowen on October 19, 1864, has died at his Queen's Beach home at Bowen. He was the eldest of a family of 10, whose parents first settled in Bowen almost 100 years ago. They originally settled at Burnford, where the grandchildren still carry on farming pursuits. The family probably comprises the oldest residents in Bowen.
Mr. Pott is survived by a sister, Mrs. E. J. Palmer aged 84), who resides with her son-in-law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Briggs (Proserpine), and a brother, Gideon Wm. Pott (aged 83), of South Africa.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Esther is recorded in the Censuses all the way thro' from 1871 - 1901; so if she went to Tasmania, she must have gone and returned between Censuses. Found Henry 1871 - 1911, except for 1891.

Hi emyr

I didn't find Henry on the 1901 census either. He doesn't appear to be with Ester and the children. Did you locate him somewhere else? I think I found Henry in 1891 in Yorkshire.

Do you know how many of the family went to Tasmania and how many, if any, stayed, and how many came back ?

Hi

I only recently found the Tasmanian connection so not sure who went and or returned. Will need to investigate.
