The Common Room / Re: Legitimising a child in the modern day
« on: Thursday 01 September 22 17:21 BST (UK)  »
My daughter had her first child in 2011. Both parents were named on the cert and the child took her father's surname. The parents married in 2012 and had to re-register the child (or go through some such official process) so that she would no longer be illegitimate. I suppose it's to do with inheritances etc. I was surprised when they told me.

Technical Help / Re: Small laptop
« on: Tuesday 17 May 22 08:48 BST (UK)  »
I've just been given a smallish Lenovo laptop bought from Currys a couple of years ago. Our main laptop is Lenovo & excellent. This 'new' one is VERY  slow, freezes, I've given up using it. It had all been cleared by an IT professional before I got it. Then I saw it has a Celeron processor and only 4GB Ram. No wonder.....  :-\

Re: removing sticky label/sellotape residue. A tip I read years ago is use plain Vaseline with a soft dry cloth, rub gently. Not sure why it works but it always has for me.

Technical Help / Re: Printer Ink - HP Instant Ink
« on: Wednesday 27 April 22 20:10 BST (UK)  »
I bought an HP Series 6000  printer a few months ago.  I am totally unimpressed with it.  It's wi-fi connected and initially it worked well.  Recently it started showing it was off-line despite the wi-fi blue light showing.  I had a technician in and he was able to get it to function but unfortunately it is now showing off-line again.  I think I will connect it with a usb cable and see if there is any improvement.  If not I will definitely buy another manufacturer's product.

We bought an HP printer during lockdown to replace our previous old but excellent and reliable HP printer.

It works OK - when it's not 'offline'. We have it as close to the router and computer as possible (within about 2 metres either way). I've lost count of the times I've used it successfully, left it for half an hour then it's failed to print because it's 'offline'- or worse, the amount of time I've wasted switching the printer and/or laptop on and off hoping they will talk to each other.

Our old printer was in a completely different room from the WiFi router and worked perfectly. Never again  :-\

The Lighter Side / Re: Impossible births

It's the labourers and washer women who cross the world to give birth several times yet spend the rest of their lives rooted in one place that get me.....

My daughter has ME and we are all hoping the research into Long Covid will bring this awful condition into the limelight and bring some hope of a cure.

The Stay Safe Board / Re: 2nd Booster
« on: Wednesday 09 March 22 21:45 GMT (UK)  »
My husband aged 75 with some health issues (but was not on the original vulnerable list) received an NHS letter inviting him to get his 2nd  booster. He did a walk-in (no appointment needed apparently) at a nearby 'cottage hospital' last Friday afternoon, was the only one there, job done. They suggested Moderna as his other 3 were Pfizer & they said a different one could provide added protection. No after-effects.
