hi...another sugar bakers descendant here....I don't if it was the lutheran tradition or a geographical custom, but all the sons and brothers...and of course the father....in my family begin their name with the. same first name...in this case, christian.-.followed by another name...which is presumably the one they were known by in the family.....this doesn't  happen with the. girls.

a tip for anyone whose sugar. bakers seem to suddenly disappear....try Liverpool
there was a big Tate and. lyles sugar factory, which employed almost exclusively german labour....and, of course, a cake culture grew up around it....theres the famous German church, of course....my lot. started off near the Tower of London. and then moved on to. Liverpool

thank you both....its nothing scandalous, but it does throw a light on working conditions and attitudes...its just general stuff...no specific individuals involved

is there any site, please, for people who work or worked on the tube....I had a relative who worked there and he told me some anecdotes and I want to see if. I can find out if they were true....I don't need names, I'm just interested to know if certain things are true..nothing mind blowing but. just interesting or amusing....not. going back very far.....the early. 1980s.

thanks

The Common Room / Re: EMMA - What names could Emma be a nickname for?
« on: Monday 10 July 23 11:57 BST (UK)  »
just on the off chance....she may have come from Germany and. have. been a Marie or Maria and tried to spell her name ....the. first two. letters would have sounded like m..aah...and that could have been enough.

ive got a case like this, where the real name was Edith and in German this sounds like ay d...and this. was registered as ada in the first couple of English records.

if she was connected to. German immigrants at this time, they dominated English sugar bakery...ie cake and. biscuit bakers

The Common Room / Re: did someone invent this name
« on: Saturday 08 July 23 11:00 BST (UK)  »
thank you all....just shows how blinkered I've been
ive sorted it out ....to put. us all out of our misery, I didn't think that a 1977 entry would contain an incorrect anglicisation...but it does...the name. is really pitylak, as. was the person I.was looking for...they were born and died. in nottm...I don't know if they are related to any. modern pitylaks in nottm but there are. quite. a few
according to the internet, the name is Ukrainian in origin, so I. guess it could be jewish,  too, and maybe the Canadian lake was named after someone named pitylak....who knows.

now, back to my own family....
