Port Glasgow was the very place, big timber yards along the shore where logs were stored in salt water. The upright posts can still be seen.

He could be anywhere, unlikely to have bought a lair at that age. Have you considered that the coffin might have been sent back to the Heilans, there were/still are? coffin clubs in Glasgow where folk paid installments to have their remains sent home. The Clyde Trust (Skye Navy) might know something.

The parish of Fearn & surname ditto, there were cases when a child was the responsibility of a parish and given its name for want of another. According to Black, "Fern of that Ilk" was a follower of the earls of Ross and the name is recorded elsewhere on the east coast.

  Black in his Surnames gives the origin as the place-name Grundwatter in Orphir, Alexander in Gyre,Orphir died in 1686, Edward in Tankerness was captured by the pressgang in 1812.
 An Orkney Groundwater was concerned in the horrible murder of Janet Cornfoot a supposed witch in Pittenweem, Fife, 1705.
